Renault Bridger To Get New 1.2L Turbo Engine & CNG Option

Renault Bridger will launch in 2027 with new 1.2L turbo petrol engine. It will rival Nexon, Sonet, Venue and Brezza.

Renault India is betting big on the all-new Bridger concept based sub-4 metre SUV, which is slated to launch in 2027. Similar to the Duster, it will be built on RGMP (Renault Group Modular Platform), featuring the new SWEET400 (Software Electric and Electronic Technology) architecture, co-developed with Google. This modular platform supports multiple body styles and powertrains, including ICE, hybrid, electric and CNG.

Underpinning the RGMP architecture, the Renault Bridger is expected to be offered with multiple powertrain options. According to a fresh media report, Renault is developing an all-new 1.2L, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine for the subcompact SUV. This engine will essentially be a derivative of the 1.3L TGDi petrol engine (with a shorter stroke) that currently powers the Duster.

Under the new GST 2.0 norms, cars or SUVs with engine capacities of up to 1200cc attract 18% GST tax (no cess). Earlier, the vehicles in this category were subject to aroound 29% tax (28% GST + 1% cess). This is one of the key reasons why OEMs are now prioritizing smaller turbo/petrol engines while also offering more features and advanced technology.

Furthermore, Renault’s new 1.2L petrol engine will use a more cost-effective multi-point fuel injection system (MPFi) instead of the direct-injection setup in Duster’s 1.3L engine. This will also make it compatible with CNG fuel. While the official power figures are yet to be revealed, the engine is expected to deliver a maximum power of around 120bhp. To make the Bridger more affordable, the carmaker might introduce a naturally aspirated version of the same 1.2L petrol motor.

The Renault Bridger concept offers a ground clearance of 200mm and a boot space of 400-litres. Key highlights include all LED lights, boxy stance, a twin-slatted grille with illuminated ‘RENAULT’ lettering, gloss-black upper body trim, sporty alloy wheels and more.
