Tata Safari and Harrier petrol variants to launch on December 9. New 1.5L turbo-petrol engine to offer 170hp and 280Nm torque. Petrol models expected to be more affordable than the diesel variants.
Tata Motors is finally ready to launch the much-awaited petrol versions of the Tata Safari and Tata Harrier on December 9, 2025. After years of development, these new petrol variants will be powered by the advanced 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and will offer a fresh option for SUV buyers in India.

The new 1.5L turbo-petrol engine is part of Tata’s ‘Hyperion’ engine series and will debut in both the Harrier and Safari. This engine will produce 170 hp and 280 Nm of torque, delivering a strong and smooth driving experience. The engine will be offered with both manual and automatic gearboxes.
Both SUVs will get the engine in the same tune as shown at the Auto Expo 2023, with 170 hp and 280 Nm of torque. While manual and automatic transmissions are confirmed, Tata is still finalizing whether it will use a torque converter or dual-clutch system for the automatic variants. The Sierra’s debut with the 1.5L engine on November 25 will give a clearer idea of the gearbox options.
The prices of the Harrier petrol and Safari petrol are expected to be slightly lower than their diesel variants. The Harrier is currently priced between Rs 14 lakh to Rs 25.25 lakh, and the Safari between Rs 14.66 lakh to Rs 25.96 lakh. The introduction of the petrol variants will offer customers an alternative to the diesel versions, making these SUVs more versatile and affordable.
The Harrier and Safari petrol will now compete against other popular SUVs like the Jeep Compass, MG Hector, and Mahindra XUV700. While most of these competitors offer both petrol and diesel options, the new petrol variants from Tata Motors will help the brand fill a gap in the market, giving buyers more choices and better value for money.
