Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways has announced that soon there will be new vehicles running 100 percent ethanol in the country. He further added that the Toyota Kirloskar Motor is already planning to launch a flex-fuel version of the Camry in India by August 2023.
Why Flex-Fuel Engines?
A flex-fuel engine is capable of running on petrol blended with ethanol, methanol, or pure ethanol. This technology is used to increase fuel versatility and reduce emissions. As of now, the vehicles powered by flex-fuel engines are available only in a few international markets including USA, Canada, and Brazil.
Toyota's Ethanol-Powered Vehicles
Last year in October 2022, Toyota showcased the flex-fuel Corolla Altis Hybrid in India. This car uses a 1.8-litre engine which is capable of producing 101 bhp of power and 142.2 Nm. The combustion engine in this model is paired with a 72 bhp electric motor and the 1.3 kWh battery pack, enhancing the overall efficiency of the vehicle and reducing its environmental footprint.
With the introduction of the flex-fuel Toyota Camry, Indian customers can expect more eco-friendly cars in the future. Inspired by Toyota, other automakers may also take the lead in introducing flex-fuel technology to India, further diversifying the options available to environmentally conscious customers.
