It is no secret that Toyota Fortuner is no longer a mass-market SUV. In fact, prices of the Fortuner has crossed Rs 60 lakh in some cities including Bangalore. The rise in price of Fortuner leaves enough void for other brands to launch SUVs in the sub-40 lakh range. Mahindra Thar Roxx, XUV700 and Scorpio N are few SUVs that records excellent sales in the Indian market.
Interestingly, Toyota has started developing an all-new rugged 4x4 SUV that will sit between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Fortuner. It was speculated that the new model will be developed on the low-cost IMV0 platform that underpins the Hilux Champ in Thailand. However, media reports claim that Toyota will use an all-new flexible platform compatible with different body styles and powertrains.
Toyota is currently selling the Innova Hycross MPV based on the existing TNGA-C platform, which also underpins the Corolla Cross in select international markets. However, this platform could prove to be expensive for the new mini Fortuner. A possibility of a low-cost version of the TNGA platform could be used for the new SUV.
The big update is that the new mini Fortuner based on the monocoque chassis is not likely to be offered with a diesel engine. The new lifestyle SUV are likely to come with petrol and strong hybrid engine options. It could receive a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine with a strong hybrid system, which is offered on the current Innova Hycross. The SUV could also receive a pure petrol engine, which could be the 2.0L unit offered in the Hycross. An electric version could be introduced at a later stage.
The upcoming SUV is most likely to share styling from the existing Fortuner, featuring high ground clearance, rugged looks and 4x4 drivetrain. It is reportedly to be produced at Toyota's new Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar plant in Maharashtra. Production of the SUV is expected to begin in 2027.
