New Pajero returns on Triton ladder-frame platform. Diesel engine options up to 204 PS with 6-speed automatic. Designed to compete with Fortuner, Everest, and MU-X.
After nearly five years away from global showrooms, the Mitsubishi Pajero is set to make a strong comeback. The next-generation model takes a new approach by returning to a traditional ladder-frame platform based on the latest Mitsubishi Triton pickup. This shift is aimed at improving off-road performance, reducing costs, and keeping the SUV competitive against segment rivals like the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest, and Isuzu MU-X.
Unlike the previous generation that used an integrated monocoque ladder frame, the new Pajero will adopt a full ladder-frame design. The first two generations of the Pajero were built on ladder-frame platforms, giving them strong off-road capability. By sharing the platform with the Triton, Mitsubishi can also use common components, lower development costs, and include the latest off-road technologies.

The next Pajero is expected to be powered by the 2.4-litre 4N16 turbo-diesel engine. Internationally, this engine is offered in single-turbo and twin-turbo versions producing 184 PS and 204 PS respectively. A 6-speed automatic transmission is likely to be standard, while Mitsubishi’s Super Select II 4WD system will manage off-road driving.
This combination should make the Pajero competitive against other ladder-frame SUVs in its class, balancing power, traction, and reliability.
Mitsubishi has confirmed that the new Pajero will have model-specific front and rear suspension systems. This means the SUV should offer a smooth ride on the road while retaining the ruggedness needed for off-road conditions.
The interior is also expected to be distinct from the Triton pickup, featuring a more upmarket cabin with premium materials, modern technology, and comfort-focused design to differentiate it as a flagship SUV.
Teaser images suggest a fresh design direction. The Pajero features a full-width LED light bar at the front and a lighting signature inspired by Mitsubishi’s newer models like the Xforce. The front fascia, grille, and overall shape appear more modern and premium, while retaining the muscular, rugged look expected from an off-road SUV.
The next Pajero is expected to rival Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest, and Isuzu MU-X. Its ladder-frame architecture, diesel engine options, and advanced 4WD system make it a strong contender for buyers looking for a capable seven-seater SUV.
The SUV’s return also raises questions about the future of the Pajero Sport, which has been on sale since 2015. While Mitsubishi hasn’t confirmed its plans, the new Pajero’s size and features suggest it could eventually take over the role of the Pajero Sport in certain markets.
