Renault showcased its 4 E-Tech EV at the Paris Motor Show on Monday. Built on the CMF-B platform, which will also underpin the next-generation Renault Duster, the 4 E-Tech could form part of the brand's future electric vehicle lineup for India. Notably, the carmaker’s current portfolio does not have an EV.
The Renault 4 E-Tech blends classic design elements with a modern twist. Its front features a flat grille with an illuminated Renault logo and circular LED daytime running lights, a nod to the original Renault 4 from the 1960s. The car runs on 18-inch alloy wheels and the doors have three distinct creases, adding to its retro appeal. A "4" badge on the tailgate, framed by vertical taillights, completes its modern yet nostalgic look. It even has functional roof rails, with an optional retractable fabric roof.
Inside, it sports a dual-screen layout with a 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This system also comes with built-in Google apps for seamless connectivity on the go. Further, the EV includes 26 driver assistance features, supported by Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
A standout feature is the 'Reno' virtual assistant powered by ChatGPT, making voice commands more intuitive and engaging. It also supports bidirectional charging, which allows the vehicle to power external devices – V2L – or even send energy back to the grid, a feature that adds convenience and sustainability.
The Renault 4 E-Tech offers two battery and motor options, catering to different driving needs. The Urban Range (UR) version comes with a 40kWh battery paired with a 90kW motor, delivering 120bhp and 225Nm of torque and a driving range of up to 300 kilometres.
For those who want more power and range, the Comfort Range (CR) version has a 52kWh battery and a 110kW motor, offering 150bhp, 245Nm of torque and a longer range of 400 kilometres. Both versions support fast charging, with the UR trim capable of charging from 15% to 80% in 30 minutes using DC fast chargers.
Measuring over 4 meters long, the Renault 4 E-Tech falls under a high tax bracket in the country. Unlike traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles over 4 meters long, which attract a 43% tax rate, electric vehicles attract only a 5% tax. This could make the 4 E-Tech a highly competitive and affordable option for Indian buyers looking to switch to electric mobility. With increasing government focus on EV adoption and lower taxes on electric vehicles, the Renault 4 E-Tech could attract price-sensitive Indian consumers.
