For the past few years, Mahindra & Mahindra has been revealing new models on 15 August. The XUV700, Scorpio N, and Thar second-gen, all have been launched on this date. We recently reported that for this year, the brand will reveal a new pickup based on the Scorpio N. Now, it looks like Mahindra will also showcase a new ‘far out’ Thar concept that is likely going to have an all-electric powertrain.
The Mahindra Thar EV concept will retain the ICE model’s off-road prowess with a 4x4 setup. However, unlike most AWD EVs that use dual electric motors, the concept will instead have a quad-motor setup. This will allow the EV to have crab walk abilities where the SUV can turn the wheels at a nearly 45-degree angle. It will allow the Thar EV concept to perform tricks like a 360-degree turn on the spot or to roll sideways into a parking spot.
While Mahindra is yet to reveal any details, the Thar EV could be underpinned by the same ladder-frame chassis as the ICE sibling or the new pure EV platform the automaker is currently developing. While the brand has not produced a hardcore off-roader with a monocoque chassis, the Thar EV could use it to offset the weight the heavy battery pack will add.
Ladder-frame SUVs are generally heavier than monocoque SUVs and the cross members of the chassis also inhibit packaging as it limits the space available for the battery pack. However, ladder-framed electric SUVs bring some unique benefits like a higher load capacity and increased towing capabilities.
Mahindra has previously stated that it is looking into the idea of a ladder-frame EV. The Thar EV could also act as a proof of concept of the brand’s idea and give us a look into the automaker’s direction going forward.
The UV giant is yet to reveal any launch details of the Thar EV concept, nor has it confirmed that it will go into production. Mahindra has to work on the production feasibility of the concept first before announcing a launch date. We will likely get to know more about the Thar EV concept at the August 15 event.
