Mahindra is currently developing a strong hybrid powertrain for XUV 3XO It is expected to be launched by 2026 Mahindra INGLO-based electric SUVs could get range extenders
Mahindra is currently engaged in expanding its new car lineup. Recently, the brand launched the BE 6 and XEV 9e with the base and top-end variant pricing. The mid-spec model is yet to be revealed at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. Apart from these new innovations, Mahindra is also developing a new strong-hybrid powertrain and range-extender hybrids. Let's get more insights!
The homegrown automaker is working on a strong hybrid system for the XUV 3XO which is called project S226.
The XUV 3XO is currently powered by three powertrains. These include a 1.2-litre turbocharged MPFi (110bhp/200 Nm), a 1.5-litre diesel engine (115 bhp/300 Nm), and a 1.2-litre mStallion turbocharged engine (115 bhp/300 Nm).
Speculations suggest that the new strong-hybrid system could come with the 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine.
Not only this, Mahindra is also considering the range extender hybrid systems for the INGLO platform which underpin BE 6 and XEV 9e. However, it is said that the brand will proceed further after seeing the market response of INGLO-based car models, ie., BE 6 and XEV 9e.
The electric iteration of the XUV 3XO will also join later this year. Ahead of that, the XUV 3XO EV was spied testing, revealing its exterior design. It is expected to come with two battery packs - 34 kWh and 39.4 kWh. Both can offer a range of 375 km and 456 km, respectively.
Apart from Mahindra, other car brands such as Toyota and Maruti Suzuki could also introduce new car models with hybrid powertrain. Currently, these brands have Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Grand Vitara available in the hybrid setup. In fact, Maruti has already begun developing the range extender solution for compact cars in order to publicize the hybrid technology in India.
