It is no secret that Maruti Suzuki is preparing to introduce multiple new hybrid cars in the country. MSIL believes that EV adoption in India will take time as customers have range anxiety coupled with lack of charging infrastructure. Hybrids with petrol engine backup eliminate this range anxiety, and it can help bridge the gap until India's charging infrastructure is fully developed.
In fact, Maruti Suzuki is developing its own hybrid system which will be fitted to its entry-level cars including Fronx, Baleno, Dzire, Brezza and others. Adding to it, the company will continue to utilize Toyota's TNGA hybrid unit to power its bigger SUVs.
The Indo-Japanese brand is working on two new hybrid SUVs including a new 7-seater SUV based on Grand Vitara and the Fronx facelift. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx will be the first model to feature Suzuki's in-house developed hybrid engine. On the flip side, the 7-seater Vitara will use Toyota's 1.5L TNGA hybrid engine that powers the Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder. For people not in the know, Toyota will also introduce the 7-seater Hyryder in the market.
The company is developing an in-house and affordable Series hybrid engine, which works as a range extender. Codenamed HEV, the new hybrid system will be cheaper than the series-parallel and parallel-only hybrid system.
In the Series hybrid engine, the petrol engine works as a range extender and powers an electric motor that, in turn, drive the wheels. The electric motor will drive the wheels, which source power from either a small battery pack or from a petrol engine.
The new Maruti Suzuki Series Hybrid engine will comprise of the all-new Z12E, 3-cylinder engine. The engine will charge a smaller battery pack (1.5-2kWh), while the electric motor will drive the front wheels.
The new 7-seater Maruti SUV will share the engine options with the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. It will be offered with the 103bhp, 1.5L K15C petrol mild hybrid engine and the 92bhp, 1.5L, 3-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine with an electric motor generating 79bhp. The strong hybrid engine offers a combined power output of 115bhp.
The new Maruti Suzuki in-house developed Series hybrid engine will debut in the Fronx facelift, which is reportedly to arrive in the second half of 2025. This engine will also power the next-gen Baleno and the new Swift. Moreover, MSIL is working on an all-new 7-seater compact MPV which will be launched in 2026. This sub-4 meter MPV will also get the in-house developed hybrid engine. Maruti Suzuki is aiming to achieve a certified mileage of around 30-35kmpl.
