India’s First Affordable Flex-Fuel Cars Coming Soon - Fronx & Punch?

Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors to launch first flex-fuel vehicles in 2026. Flex-fuel vehicles use high-ethanol petrol.

In 2026, the Indian automobile industry is set to witness a major transformation in technology, market demand, regulations and government policies. A multi-powertrain strategy is taking the center stage as electric vehicles (EVs) are moving into the mainstream, hybrid vehicles are gaining popularity and flex-fuel vehicles begin to rollout.

India’s two major carmakers, Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors are gearing up to introduce their first flex fuel models by the end of this year.

What is a Flex Fuel Vehicle (FFV)?

If you wondering what flex fuel vehicles are, here is the answer. These vehicles are designed to run on petrol blended with a higher percentage of ethanol such as E85 (85% ethanol and 15% petrol) and E100 (nearly pure ethanol). India has already achieved nationwide availability of E20 petrol. FFVs will lower India’s dependence on imported crude oil, while reducing emissions and running cost.

Maruti Fronx Flex Fuel For India?

Maruti Suzuki showcased the Fronx flex fuel concept at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. The model featured bright green ‘Flex Fuel’ stickers on the exterior, while retaining the standard design and dimensions of the regular Fronx. The compact crossover sported black 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, split headlamps, bumpers with faux skid plats and chrome detailing, thick black cladding and a sloping roofline.

Maruti Suzuki’s 1.2L and 1.5L petrol engines are compatible with flex fuel technology, and the carmaker is likely to use one of these powertrains in the Fronx FFV.

Tata Punch Flex Fuel Coming Soon

Punch Flex Fuel

Tata Punch could be the brand’s first FFV in India, which was unveiled in its concept form at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show. Similar to the regular Punch, the showcased model was equipped with the same 1.2L, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. However, the powertrain received an updated ECU (engine control unit), fuel injection system and exhaust after-treatment system. These calibrations enable the engine to detect the percent of ethanol in the fuel blend and adjust accordingly.

The Tata Punch is already available with petrol, CNG and electric powertrain options. The addition of a flex fuel version will further strengthen Tata Motors’ multi-powertrain strategy in India.
