Maruti Suzuki's first E100 flex-fuel car debuts on June 4. Wagon R and Fronx are the top contenders. Nitin Gadkari confirms the vehicle can run on 100% ethanol.
Maruti Suzuki is preparing for one of its most important launches in recent years. On June 4, 2026, the company will unveil India's first mass-market passenger vehicle capable of running on E100 fuel, also known as 100% ethanol.
The biggest question right now is simple: Will it be the Wagon R or the Fronx?
While Maruti Suzuki has confirmed the launch, it has deliberately kept the vehicle's identity under wraps, creating plenty of excitement ahead of the big reveal.
As the auto industry focuses heavily on electric vehicles, Maruti Suzuki is taking a different route.
The upcoming flex-fuel car is designed to run on multiple ethanol-petrol blends, including pure ethanol. This technology has the potential to reduce dependence on conventional fuels while supporting India's push for cleaner mobility solutions.
The official unveiling will take place in New Delhi on June 4, just ahead of World Environment Day.

If industry reports are accurate, the Wagon R appears to be the strongest contender.
Maruti Suzuki first showcased the Wagon R Flex Fuel prototype at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in 2024. Since then, it has often been seen as the most likely candidate for a mass-market rollout because of its popularity and affordability.
A flex-fuel Wagon R would allow Maruti to introduce this technology to a large customer base from day one.
The Fronx remains another strong possibility.
Maruti Suzuki displayed the Fronx Flex Fuel prototype at the Japan Mobility Show in 2025, proving that the technology can also be adapted to newer products in its lineup.
With the Fronx becoming one of the company's fastest-growing models, some believe Maruti could use it to showcase a more premium side of flex-fuel technology.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently confirmed that the vehicle being unveiled by Maruti Suzuki will be capable of running on 100 percent ethanol.
The launch event is expected to be attended by Gadkari and Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, highlighting the importance of the project.
Gadkari has consistently advocated ethanol-powered vehicles, saying they can help reduce fuel imports, cut emissions and create additional opportunities for farmers.
Maruti Suzuki has already stated that it possesses the technology needed for flex-fuel vehicles.
Company executives recently confirmed that the brand is ready to support future ethanol-blending requirements and flex-fuel adoption whenever demand increases.
However, widespread adoption will depend on the availability of higher ethanol blends across India.

Whether it's the Wagon R or the Fronx, Maruti Suzuki's upcoming launch will mark a major milestone for the Indian auto industry.
The company isn't just unveiling a new car. It is introducing a technology that could play a key role in India's future mobility plans.
All eyes are now on June 4 to see which Maruti becomes India's first mass-market E100-compatible passenger vehicle.
