Hyundai’s affordable compact EV to launch in India. It will compete against the Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
Hyundai India recently confirmed two all-new SUV launches for the current financial year - a midsize and a compact EV. The new Hyundai midsize SUV is expected to be based on the globally sold Bayon, and sit between the Venue and Creta in the company’s product lineup. The upcoming Hyundai compact EV, on the other hand, will be a localized model challenging the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO. It will be designed, engineered and manufactured in India specifically for Indian buyers.
Codenamed HE1i, the new Hyundai compact EV will be built on the brand’s affordable E-GMP (K) platform that supports 800V fast charging. This scalable EV architecture accommodates a low-mounted battery pack, and maximizing cabin space. Hyundai’s Sriperumbudur manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu will serve as production for the EV. Aiming to achieve competitive pricing, Hyundai will source localized battery packs from Exide.
Hyundai is yet to confirm the powertrain details. However, the new Hyundai compact EV is expected to share battery pack options with the Europe-spec Hyundai Inster EV. The latter is available with 42kWh Standard Range and 49kWh Long Range options, paired with a 97bhp and a 115bhp electric motor, respectively. The Standard variant offers a claimed WLTP range of 300km, while the Long-Range version promises 355km per charge.
The upcoming Hyundai compact EV SUV could be feature-packed similar to the Inster EV, which offers dual 10.25-inch displays for touchscreen infotainment and instrument functionalities, automatic climate control, a 360 degree camera with blind spot monitoring, In-car connectivity, OTA (Over-the-Air) updates, Level 2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance system), multiple airbags and more.
Targeting the subcompact electric SUV segment, Hyundai is likely to price the new EV around Rs 10 lakh for the base variant and nearly Rs 14-15 lake for the top variant. If launched at this price point, it will become Hyundai’s smallest and most affordable electric offering in India.
