Hyundai is developing a new sub-4m electric SUV for India and global markets. The EV may offer up to 355 km range with fast charging support. It will rival the Tata Punch EV in the compact electric SUV space.
Hyundai is preparing a new sub-4-metre electric SUV for India and global markets, and it could arrive by late 2026 or early 2027. This upcoming EV, internally called HE1i, will be part of Hyundai’s big global plan of launching 26 new models by FY2030.
The SUV will enter the fast-growing compact EV segment and take on rivals like the Tata Punch EV.
The new Hyundai subcompact electric SUV follows a tall and boxy design language, similar to the global Hyundai Inster EV.
Even under camouflage, the SUV clearly shows EV styling elements like a closed front grille, split headlamp setup, and top-mounted LED DRLs.
The body design is simple and flat, giving it a strong and practical SUV stance. The roofline is straight, while the window line also runs almost parallel to the ground.
Other highlights include blacked-out ORVMs, roof rails, body cladding, and 17-inch alloy wheels fitted with Apollo tyres. At the rear, the SUV is expected to get a short overhang, chunky bumper design, and possibly pixel-style LED lighting.

Hyundai is expected to equip this compact EV with a modern and premium cabin to stay competitive in the segment.
It may get a dual 10.25-inch screen setup for infotainment and driver display. Other expected features include automatic climate control, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof.
The SUV is also likely to offer EV-specific features like Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), along with flexible cabin layouts for better practicality in daily use.
Safety will be a key priority for Hyundai in this EV. The SUV is expected to come with Level 2 ADAS features, along with 6 or 7 airbags and a 360-degree camera.
This will help it compete strongly in the growing budget EV segment, where safety and tech are becoming major buying factors.
The new SUV is expected to be based on a modified version of the E-GMP (K) platform, which also underpins Hyundai’s global EV lineup.
It may share battery options with the Inster EV, including 42 kWh and 49 kWh packs, offering a WLTP range of around 300 km to 355 km depending on variant.
Fast charging support of up to 120 kW DC is expected, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes.
Hyundai is planning to sell this EV in multiple global markets, with India expected to play a key manufacturing role.
Local production will help keep pricing competitive, making it a strong contender in the subcompact EV space dominated by affordable electric SUVs.
