Tata Safari EV production to begin by August 2026 Launch expected by Sept-Oct, before Diwali To rival Mahindra XEV 9S
We informed you earlier that Tata Motors is considering an EV derivative of the Safari SUV. A new media report claims that the Tata Safari EV will be launched in our market by the festive season, before Diwali 2026. Set to be the brand’s first 7-seater electric SUV, the new model will directly rival the new Mahindra XEV 9S. Production of the new Safari EV is expected to commence by August 2026.
Codenamed Tayrona, the upcoming Tata Safari EV will be based on the same acti.ev+ platform that underpins the Harrier EV. Not just the architecture, the electric SUV will source its battery and motor configurations with the Tata Harrier EV. It will be offered with two battery choices, including 65kWh and 75kWh units with a rear-axle-mounted electric motor as standard. The higher-spec model will get a dual-motor AWD setup.
The existing Harrier EV is claimed to offer an ARAI certified range of up to 627km with 75kWh RWD powertrain, while the AWD version delivers 622km. The lower-spec Harrier EV with 65kWh battery and RWD setup delivers 538km of range. The Tata Safari EV will be longer and heavier than the 5-seater sibling. We expect the new Safari EV to offer a range of around 600km with bigger battery pack, and a realistic range of up to 450km on a single charge. The SUV will support up to 100kW DC fast charging.
The 7-seater Tata EV will offer multiple terrain modes - Normal, Snow/Grass, Mud-Ruts, Sand, Rock, Crawl and Custom, and multi-link rear suspension with frequency-dependent dampers.
The Tata Safari EV will look largely identical to its ICE-derivative, except for the few EV-specific changes. It will get a closed-off front grille, revised bumpers, EV-badging and aero-optimised alloy wheels. Inside the cabin, the SUV will get the TiDAL (Tata Intelligent Digital Architecture Layer) E&E architecture that is also offered with the Harrier EV.
The same setup with the Harrier EV enables multiple features like OTA updated, a 540-degree surround view function, upgraded LEVEL 2 ADAS, auto-park assist, a UPI-based in-car payment system, low-speed cruise control, a summon mode and others.
