Toyota Confirms: No Plans to Discontinue Fortuner, Hilux Diesel

We informed you earlier that Toyota will discontinue the Innova Crysta diesel due to the implementation of the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) 3 norms. It was speculated that the new norms could also impact the Fortuner and Hilux pick-up; however, Toyota officials confirms that diesel vehicles will continue to be on sale after 2027. The highly popular Toyota Fortuner SUV and Hilux lifestyle pickup will continue to be on sale with diesel engines beyond 2027.

Speaking to Autocar India, Sabari Manohar, Executive VP, Sales and Service at TKM, said that the demand for larger diesel SUVs remains consistently high. He further added “there are hardcore fans for diesel” and “Diesel is Diesel.” He claims that the demand for diesel-powered SUVs and MPVs has not disappeared, and the demand is shaped by customer patterns and segment-specific requirements.

Toyota Fortuner and Hilux

The Toyota Fortuner and Hilux lifestyle SUV will continue to be offered with the 2.8L diesel engine. This engine is capable of producing 204PS of power and a peak torque of 420Nm with manual and 500Nm with automatic gearbox. There is a mild-hybrid version,  which has a belt-integrated starter generator, 48V lithium-ion battery and regenerative braking system. Next-Gen Hilux

Toyota is preparing to launch the next-gen Hilux lifestyle pickup in the Indian market by March 2026. It will come as a CBU model, and will carry a higher price tag. The India-spec model will get the 2.8-litre diesel engine with the 48V mild hybrid setup, which we have already seen on the Fortuner Neo Drive. The battery is placed underneath the rear seats to ensure maximum cabin space. It is claimed to have a payload of one tonne and towing capacity of 3,500kg.
