Most of the automakers in India are looking at electric vehicles to drive sales in near future. However, Maruti Suzuki is looking to offer a wide range of fuel options to drive growth in the market. The company currently holds over 70% market share in CNG segment, and is now looking at hybrids to further boost sales.
Maruti Suzuki is currently selling the Grand Vitara with a Toyota’s strong hybrid engine. The company is now working on its own hybrid technology, which is designed for the mass-market offerings. The new hybrid tech will be significantly cheaper than Toyota’s Atkinson cycle setup.
The company is developing a new Series hybrid engine, which works as a range extender. Codenamed HEV, the new Maruti hybrid system will be cheaper than the series-parallel and parallel-only hybrid system. In this powertrain, the petrol engine works as a range extender and powers an electric motor that, in turn, drive the wheels. The electric motor will drive the wheels, which source power from either a small battery pack or from a petrol engine.
The new Maruti Suzuki Series hybrid engine will utilise the all-new Z12E, 3-cylinder engine, which will charge a smaller battery pack (1.5-2kWh) and the electric motor will drive the front wheels.

| Next-gen Brezza | 2029 |
Maruti Suzuki will launch an all-new midsize SUV, rumoured to be called the Escudo, in September, 2025. The new model will be exclusively sold through ARENA dealership network as a flagship model. It will be made available with petrol, hybrid and CNG fuel options.
The new Escudo is based on Suzuki’s Global-C platform that underpins the Grand Vitara. It will rival the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and others in the segment. The new model will share the Toyota’s TNGA 1.5L engine with the Grand Vitara and Hyryder. Expect the new model to offer a fuel efficiency of over 27kmpl.

It will be the first model to get Maruti Suzuki’s in-house developed Series Hybrid engine. The new Fronx facelift will be launched in the country in 2026. The updated model is expected to offer a claimed fuel efficiency of over 35kmpl. Adding to it, the regular ICE version will get the new 1.2L Z-Series petrol engine that powers the Swift and Dzire.
Maruti Suzuki is developing a new entry-level MPV, which is reportedly to be based on the SPACIA MPV on sale in Japan. Codenamed YDB, the new 3-row Maruti Suzuki MPV is expected to be launched in the country in 2026-27. The Suzuki Spacia is 3.4 meter long mini VAN, but India-spec model will be stretched up to 4 meters. It will look different from the Japnese-spec model and will have regular doors with sliding function in 2nd row seats to access the last row. The low-cost MPV will be equipped with a new series hybrid powertrain comprising 1.2L, 3-cylinder petrol engine, a 1.5-2kWh battery pack and an electric motor.

Maruti Suzuki’s popular mass-market cars, including Baleno, Swift and Brezza will receive the in-house developed Series hybrid engine, but in their next-gen avatars. The current-gen Baleno was launched in 2015 and had received a major upgrade in February 2022. It is expected that the next-gen Maruti Baleno will be introduced in 2026 or 2027.
Previous media reports suggest that the next-gen Swift hatchback will arrive sometime in 2027-28, while the next-gen Brezza will be introduced by 2029. All three models will receive Maruti Suzuki’s in-house developed hybrid engine.
