In a major move to reduce air pollution, Delhi will stop supplying fuel to overage vehicles starting July 1, 2025. This ban applies to all vehicles that have crossed their permissible age limit—10 years for diesel vehicles and 15 years for petrol vehicles. The Transport Department, Delhi Police, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will work together to enforce the new rule across the city.

The new regulation will affect owners of End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) in Delhi. These include:
- Diesel vehicles older than 10 years
- Petrol vehicles older than 15 years
If your vehicle falls in this category, you will not be allowed to refuel it at any petrol, diesel, or CNG station in Delhi.
To ensure strict enforcement, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have been installed at 498 fuel stations across Delhi. This includes:
- 382 petrol and diesel stations
- 116 CNG stations
- 3 major bus terminals (ISBTs)
These high-speed cameras will scan number plates and match them with the VAHAN database to check the vehicle's age and fuel type. If flagged as an ELV, the fuel station operator will receive an alert and will deny fuel supply to the vehicle.
To prevent any violations, joint teams from the Transport Department, Delhi Traffic Police, and MCD will be deployed at fuel stations, especially those identified as hotspots where a high number of ELVs are spotted.
These teams will:
- Monitor fuel stations in real time
- Take action against vehicles and fuel stations breaking the rules
- Ensure proper reporting and coordination across departments
Special Commissioner (Traffic), Ajay Chaudhary, confirmed that deployment plans are being finalised, especially for fuel stations operating 24x7.
The government has issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for fuel station operators. These include:
- Mandatory signage displaying the ban on fuel supply to overage vehicles
- Staff training to handle situations involving fuel denial
- Manual or digital logs of fuel denial incidents
- Weekly reporting to the Transport Department
Strict action will be taken against fuel stations that fail to follow the rules, and a report will be sent weekly to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
According to CAQM, the transport sector in Delhi-NCR contributes:
- 28% of PM2.5 emissions
- 41% of Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)
- 78% of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)
The decision to stop fueling overage vehicles is part of a larger plan to improve air quality, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly and children.
CAQM member Dr. Virender Sharma emphasized that while existing laws already prohibit overage vehicles in Delhi, strict steps like denying fuel are needed to ensure real impact on the ground.
After Delhi, the fuel ban will also be implemented in five high-traffic NCR districts starting October 31, 2025:
- Gurgaon
- Faridabad
- Ghaziabad
- Gautam Buddha Nagar
- Sonipat
Authorities hope that these strict measures will help control pollution and push vehicle owners to scrap overage vehicles or switch to cleaner alternatives like EVs.
