Maruti Suzuki is developing an all-new hybrid engine that will first be introduced in the facelifted Fronx, expected in late 2025. This new hybrid technology has been developed in-house and marks a major step in the company’s journey towards cleaner and more fuel-efficient vehicles. Unlike Maruti’s current hybrid offerings that rely on Toyota’s technology, this system is fully homegrown and designed for better affordability and efficiency.
At the heart of Maruti’s new hybrid setup is a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Z12E petrol engine. This engine will not directly power the wheels. Instead, it will act as a generator to charge a compact battery pack—estimated to be between 1.5kWh to 2kWh—which in turn powers an electric motor to drive the front wheels. This configuration is called a series hybrid or range extender, and it differs from the parallel hybrid systems currently used in the Grand Vitara and Invicto.
The facelifted Maruti Fronx will be the first model to showcase this technology. The car is expected to launch in India by late 2025, making it the first model from Maruti to use this in-house hybrid powertrain. The Fronx hybrid will offer a significantly higher fuel efficiency figure, targeting over 35 kmpl, making it one of the most economical SUVs in its segment.
After the Fronx, Maruti Suzuki plans to introduce this new hybrid system in three more models: the next-generation Baleno, Swift, and Brezza. Both the Baleno and Swift will receive the same Z12E-based series hybrid technology. The Baleno hybrid is likely to launch in early 2026, while the Swift hybrid could arrive alongside or shortly after the Fronx facelift. With this upgrade, both hatchbacks are expected to offer fuel efficiency of more than 35 kmpl—helping Maruti stay ahead in the mileage game.
In addition to hatchbacks and compact SUVs, Maruti is also working on a new mini MPV based on the Spacia, codenamed YDB. Set to launch by 2026, this sub-4-meter MPV will also use the same hybrid powertrain. Positioned below the Ertiga, the new model will be sold via Nexa showrooms and will rival the likes of the Renault Triber. It is expected to come with a three-row seating layout and be more spacious than its Japanese counterpart.
