Fuel Price Hike: 100-Octane Petrol at Rs 160, Premium Diesel Up

100-octane petrol hiked by Rs 11, now costs Rs 160/litre Premium diesel price also increased amid rising crude oil rates No change in regular petrol and diesel prices in Delhi

Fuel prices in India have seen a fresh update, but this time, the impact is limited to premium fuels. The price of 100-octane petrol in Delhi has been increased sharply, while premium diesel has also become slightly costlier. The revision comes into effect from April 1 and is linked to rising global crude oil prices.

100-octane petrol gets a sharp price hike

The biggest change is in the price of 100-octane petrol, which has gone up from Rs 149 per litre to Rs 160 per litre in Delhi. This marks a steep increase of Rs 11 per litre.

High-octane petrol is usually preferred in performance-oriented and luxury cars as it offers better combustion and efficiency. However, with this hike, running such vehicles is set to become more expensive.

Premium diesel price also increased

Along with petrol, the price of premium diesel has also been revised. It now costs Rs 92.99 per litre, up from Rs 91.49 per litre earlier.

Premium diesel contains special additives and has a higher cetane number compared to regular diesel, which helps in smoother engine performance and better efficiency.

Why are fuel prices going up?

The recent hike in premium fuel prices comes amid rising crude oil prices in the global market. Crude has surged from around USD 70 per barrel a couple of months ago to over USD 100 per barrel now.

One of the key reasons behind this spike is supply disruption due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. This has put pressure on fuel costs worldwide, including in India.

No change in regular petrol and diesel prices

Despite the increase in premium fuels, there is no change in the prices of regular petrol and diesel for now.

In Delhi, petrol continues to retail at Rs 94.77 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs 87.67 per litre. The government had recently reduced excise duty, which has helped keep prices stable for everyday consumers.

Earlier hike in 95-octane petrol

It is worth noting that state-run oil companies had already increased the price of 95-octane petrol by up to Rs 2.35 per litre on March 20.

This indicates a gradual rise in premium fuel prices over the past few weeks.

Private fuel retailers have raised prices

Reports suggest that private fuel retailers have also increased prices to manage losses caused by expensive crude oil.

In some cities like Bengaluru, petrol and diesel prices at private outlets have seen a noticeable jump, making them significantly costlier than public sector pumps.

Panic buying reported in some areas

Even though the government has assured that there is no shortage of fuel, reports from a few regions suggest long queues at fuel stations.

There have also been instances of panic buying and stockpiling, especially in areas where supply delays were reported earlier. Dealer associations have warned that continued disruptions could lead to temporary shortages if not managed properly.

Fuel supply remains stable, says government

The government has maintained that there is no shortage of fuel in the country. Officials have stated that crude oil inventory is sufficient and refineries are operating at full capacity.

For now, while premium fuel users will feel the pinch, regular consumers continue to get relief with stable petrol and diesel prices.
