This year, Maruti Suzuki India introduced the new-generation Swift hatchback and Dzire compact sedan, along with several special editions of its popular models. For 2025, the Indo-Japanese automaker has ambitious plans, including three major product launches. The Maruti e Vitara will be the company’s first-ever electric offering, slated to go on sale by March 2025. This electric SUV will be followed by a three-row version of the Grand Vitara and a facelift of the Fronx. The updated Fronx will also mark the debut of Maruti Suzuki’s in-house-developed strong hybrid powertrain. Let’s explore the exciting details of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki SUVs.
The Maruti e Vitara is essentially the production version of the eVX concept, which debuted in November this year in Milan. It’s a born-electric midsize SUV based on the all-new skateboard Heartect-e platform. This architecture reportedly features eAxles that combine an inverter and a motor. Maruti Suzuki’s first EV will be available with two battery packs – 49kWh and 61kWh – both equipped with a single-motor RWD setup as standard. The dual-motor AWD system will be exclusively offered with the 61kWh battery variants.
Although the carmaker hasn’t officially disclosed the range, the e Vitara is estimated to deliver over 500km on a single charge. The smaller battery pack generates 144bhp, while the larger battery produces 174bhp with the single motor setup and 184bhp with the dual motor configuration. The AWD model will also feature the AllGrip-e system, offering a Trail mode. The design and interior of the Maruti e Vitara will take a distinct approach compared to the brand’s existing lineup.
Codenamed Y17, the upcoming Maruti Suzuki 7-seater SUV will be based on the Grand Vitara. This means it will share numerous design elements, features, and powertrains with its 5-seater sibling. Its market launch is anticipated by mid-2025, making it the first model to be manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s new Kharkhoda facility in Haryana.
The 7-seater SUV is expected to be offered with two powertrain options: a 1.5L Atkinson cycle strong hybrid and a 1.5L K15C petrol mild hybrid. Compared to the 5-seater Grand Vitara, this three-row SUV will come with more features. While official details are yet to be revealed, the model is rumored to include an ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) suite and an AWD option. If introduced, it will be the first Maruti Suzuki vehicle in India to feature ADAS technology.
The three-row Grand Vitara will be longer than the 5-seater version, offering more cabin space to accommodate an additional row of seats.
The facelifted Maruti Suzuki Fronx is expected to arrive in the second half of 2025. While minimal changes will be made to its exterior and interior, the most significant update will come in the form of a new 1.2L, 3-cylinder Z12E petrol engine (borrowed from the Swift hatchback) paired with Maruti Suzuki’s in-house-developed strong hybrid technology.
This new strong hybrid powertrain is expected to gradually make its way into Maruti Suzuki’s mass-market offerings, including the Baleno, Brezza, and Swift. Compared to Toyota’s Atkinson cycle powertrain, Maruti’s series hybrid setup will be significantly more cost-effective, making the Fronx one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the country.
