Renault’s Budget EV Comeback: Kwid EV Seen Testing, Will Rival Tiago EV

Renault India seems ready to return to action after a quiet few years. The company has been selling the Kwid, Triber, and Kiger, but hasn’t launched any new major product since the Duster was discontinued in 2022. However, there’s renewed buzz as the Renault Kwid EV has been spotted testing once again, hinting at a possible launch soon.

Renault Kwid EV Spied Testing Multiple Times

Unlike the Kiger EV, which was spotted just once and then disappeared, the Kwid EV has been seen several times since 2024. The latest test mule was seen on the road — not on a flatbed — wearing a red temporary registration plate from Tamil Nadu. This is where the Renault Nissan plant is located, making it clear that testing is active and ongoing.

Design Looks Similar to Global Dacia Spring EV

From the spy shots, it appears that the Renault Kwid EV could be based on the Dacia Spring EV sold in international markets. The test vehicle was heavily camouflaged but revealed a rear wiper, washer, and parking sensors. The antenna is a standard type, and there are no alloy wheels, keeping costs in check.

Features Suggest Budget-Friendly Focus

The Kwid EV seems to carry forward the budget DNA of the standard Kwid. It has wheel covers instead of alloy wheels, simple pull-type door handles, and ORVMs with turn indicators. The body will likely feature plastic cladding for an SUV-inspired design, while LED DRLs are expected at the front.

Expected Power and Range

Although not officially confirmed, the Kwid EV may come with the same 26.8 kWh battery seen in the Dacia Spring. This could offer a driving range of around 220 km on a single charge. Renault may also localize components to keep costs lower for the Indian market.

Launch Timeline and Rivals

If all goes well, the Renault Kwid EV could launch in India by late 2025 or early 2026. It will compete with other budget EVs like the Tata Tiago EV, MG Comet EV, and Citroen eC3. A starting price around Rs 7 lakh (ex-showroom) is expected, making it one of the most affordable electric cars in India.
