Tata Motors has aggressive EV product strategy for the Indian market as it aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045. The indigenous automaker will also maintain a strong presence in the ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicle market by introducing new models and different powertrains, special editions and facelifts of its existing product lineup. For 2025, the OEM has planned three petrol SUVs – Harrier, Safari and Sierra.
The Tata Harrier and Safari petrol SUVs will be offered with Tata’s all-new 1.5L turbocharged, direct injection petrol engine. This four-cylinder gasoline unit delivers a claimed power of 170bhp at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque between 2,000rpm – 3,500rpm. Tata says its new TGDi petrol engine has aluminium body built, making it lightweight and stiffer. Compared to Tata’s other engines, it promises better performance and fuel efficiency.
The new 1.5L TGDi petrol engine has been benefited with the variable valve timing , dual cam phasing, a variable oil pump and an integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head. Furthermore, a water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger is claimed to offer better torque from lower in the rev range for improved acceleration. The carmaker states that its new petrol engine will have a longer service life and lower cost of ownership, thanks to its new valve trains and timing chains.
The Tata Sierra will come with multiple powertrain options including petrol, diesel and electric. The SUV’s petrol version could be offered with the 1.2L Hyperion turbo direct injection or 1.5L turbo TGDi engine. Tata’s new Hyperion petrol engine, which also powers the Curvv coupe SUV, generates a maximum power of 125bhp at 5,000rpm and 225Nm of torque between 1,700rpm – 3,500rpm. This motor has been made up of all-aluminium and features a variable oil pump, variable valve timing technology and integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head.
The Sierra ICE will be built on the ATLAS platform and feature the modern design elements such as the signature grille, sporty bumper and multi-spoke alloy wheels. However, it will retain the iconic rectangular rear quarter window. At the back, the SUV will feature full width LED taillamps and a glossy black rear bumper with silver skid plate.
