The long-awaited Toyota electric compact SUV has finally been revealed. Called the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV, the new electric SUV is based on the same platform that underpins the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara. In fact, it shares the same battery pack and drivetrain with the Suzuki's model. It will first go on sale in Europe. Toyota has also revealed that it will have 15 zero emission vehicles in its range by 2026.
It is basically the production version of the Urban Concept SUV, which debuted last year. In terms of proportions, the Toyota Urban Cruiser is 4285mm long, 1800mm wide and 1640mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2700mm. This electric compact SUV has a turning radius of just 5.2 meters. The range-topping model gets 19-inch wheels, while lower models get 18-inch wheels.
The SUV's wheelbase is around 140mm more than the Yaris Cross, indicating a spacious and versatile interior. The Urban Cruiser EV comes with a sliding rear seat system, which allows the passenger to create extra space. In fact, Toyota claims that the SUV's second-row space will be on "par with much larger, D-segment SUVs." The seats split-fold in a 40:20:40 configuration and can also be reclined.
The electric SUV comes with dual-tone black and dark grey interior scheme. It also gets ambient lighting that offers 12 different colours. In terms of features, the SUV gets a 10.25-inch digital driver's display and a 10.1-inch multimedia display, both integrated into a single screen. The infotainment system is designed for fast operation with satellite navigation that uses cloud-based data to factor in the latest traffic flow intelligence. The e-SUV gets electrically adjustable driver's seat, a JBL premium audio system and a fixed sunroof.
The all-new Toyota Urban Cruiser EV comes with advanced driver assistance system. The ADAS offers pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert and lane keep assist. The SUV also comes with a 360-degree surround view camera.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV will come with two battery packs along with single-motor FWD and dual-motor AWD setups. It is offered with a 49kWh battery pack with a front-axle-mounted electric motor, offering an output of 144hp and 189Nm of torque. The higher versions will get 61kWh battery pack with FWD and AWD setup. The front-wheel-drive version offers 174hp and 189Nm of torque, while the dual-motor AWD version delivers 184hp and 300Nm of torque.
The AWD version will have an additional 48kW motor on the rear axle, which is claimed to offer stable and secure performance on loose and slippery surfaces. The system also offers Downhill Assist Control and a Trail Mode which detects and brakes a spinning wheel while directing drive torque to the opposite wheel. The FWD model gets a "snow mode" which controls drive torque to help reduce wheel-slip when driving on snow-covered roads.
The Urban Cruiser EV will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat based manufacturing plant, which will also be used to produce Suzuki e Vitara. Both models will be exported to select international markets including Europe and Japan from India. While Maruti Suzuki e Vitara is expected to be launched in the Q2, 2025, the Toyota Urban Cruiser electric is likely to arrive in our market in late 2025.
