The Urban Cruiser EV will be the first Toyota EV in India, launching in late 2025. The Hyryder 7-Seater SUV will be based on Grand Vitara, expected by year-end with hybrid powertrains. The Fortuner MHEV might arrive in 2025-26 with ADAS and high-tech features. The FJ Cruiser (mini Fortuner) could be offered with multiple powertrain options.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the Indian arm of the Japanese automaker, has planned a range of new SUVs to cater diverse customer requirements. The OEM’s major focus will be on the full-sized SUVs whole offering multiple powertrains including hybrid and electric. Check out key details of the major upcoming Toyota SUVs:
Toyota Urban Cruiser EV will be the first electric offering from the Japanese automaker in India. It will be Toyota’s version of the Maruti e Vitara, which is scheduled to launch in March 2025. This electric SUV will hit showrooms in the second half of 2025, possibly near around Diwali season. The Urban Cruiser EV will be offered with two battery packs – 49kWh and 61kWh – paired to front axle-mounted 143bhp, electric motor and a 173bhp motor, respectively. The torque figure of both setups stands at 193Nm. The larger battery is likely to deliver a range of over 500km.
The new electric SUV from Toyota will have slightly different design from the Maruti e Vitara. It features slimmer headlamps connected via a chrome bar, a new grille and bumper with two vertical air vents and tinted windows. Interior of the new Toyota Urban Cruiser EV will be exactly similar to the e Vitara, expected the different logo. Features such as a 10.1-inch instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment system, two-spoke flat bottom steering wheel, 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat., ventilation seats, Level 1 ADAS and 7 airbags will be on offer.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor will introduce the re-badged version of the upcoming Maruti 7-seater SUV based on the Grand Vitara. This means it will be the three-row version of the Hyryder SUV. While its official launch timeline is yet to be announced, the new Toyota 7-seater SUV is likely to arrive towards the end of this year. Most of its design and styling will be similar to its 5-seater sibling. However, it will be longer and more spacious than the Hyryder. The interior will also share a strong resemblance with the 5-seater Hyryder, expect the seating configuration. This SUV could be equipped with the ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) along with the electronic stability control, 360 degree camera, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, a touchscreen infotainment system, tyre pressure monitoring system and more.
The powertrain setup might also be carried forward from the 5-seater Toyota Hyryder. The latter comes with a 1.5L K15C petrol mild hybrid and 1.5L, 3-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine with an electric motor offering 115bhp. The former comes with a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox options, while the strong hybrid setup gets an e-CVT transmission.
Toyota Fortuner with the mild hybrid powertrain is already on sale in the South African market. This version of the SUV will also make its way to India in 2025 or 2026. The Fortuner MHEV features a 2.8L diesel engine, paired with a 48V mild hybrid system. The hybrid system is claimed to offer an additional 16bhp of power and 42Nm of torque. The combined power and torque outputs stand at 201bhp and 500Nm, respectively.
Compared to the regular diesel model, the Toyota Fortuner MHEV is 5 percent more fuel efficient. It comes with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and two drivetrain options – 2WD and 4WD. Furthermore, the carmaker claims that the Fortuner MHEV’s new idle start-stop feature ensures better throttle response and a smoother engine restart. The SUV’s mild hybrid version has also been packed with features such as a 360 degree camera and ADAS suite.
The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado India launch has been confirmed for late 2025. This premium, full-size SUV will be brought as a CBU (completely built-up unit) within an estimated price range of Rs 1.7 crore – Rs 1.95 crore. The engine specifications of the India-spec version are yet to be revealed. In European and Japanese markets, the Land Cruiser Prado is available with a 2.8L diesel engine borrowed from the Toyota Fortuner. This motor is paired to a 48V mild hybrid system and an 8-speed automatic gearbox. In North America and Middle East, the SUV comes with a 2.4L petrol-hybrid powertrain.
The Land Cruiser Prado has all-black interior with a large touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, a new steering wheel with the signature moniker, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, a wireless charging pad, AC vents for the second and third rows and many more features. Some of its design highlights include square LED headlamps, 20-inch black alloy wheels, rain sensing wipers, side steps and LED taillamps.
The Japanese automaker plans more affordable vehicles for ASEAN and other growing markets (including India). The lineup will include a mini Fortuner based on the same body-on-frame platform, which is internally codenamed “500D”. This new Toyota SUV could be named Toyota FJ Cruiser or Land Cruiser FJ. Design elements such as boxy stance, squared-off wheel arches, a flat roof and a spare tyre mounted on the tailgate could be borrowed from the Land Cruiser. A few design bits might share resemblance with the compact urban cruiser EV. Reports suggest that the Toyota mini Fortuner will nearly be 4,410mm long, 1,855mm wide and 1,870mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,580mm.
Under the hood, the new Toytoa FJ Cruiser is likely to feature a 2.7L petrol and 2.4L/2.8L turbo diesel engines. The diesel version could also be offered with the mild hybrid system. This setup will also include a belt-driven electric motor/generator, a convertor and a small lithium battery pack.
