Recently, the roads of India witnessed a very highly camouflaged test model of a new SUV. The prototype, codenamed Y17, is reportedly the 7-seater version of the Maruti Grand Vitara. Maruti Y17 7-seater SUV is currently under development, and is expected to arrive sometime in 2025.
The Y17 SUV nearly borrows the same design cues from the unremarkable Grand Vitara. The doors, window line, and mirror placement almost seem identical. The third row will be accommodated because of the longer rear overhang. There will obviously be more space between the wheels in this regard for passengers in the third row.
Despite being heavily camouflaged, some design details can still be seen. The front bumper and lighting setup appear to be inspired by the upcoming Maruti e-Vitara. The SUV features LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) with Maruti’s signature three-dot pattern, while the main headlamps are positioned on the bumper. The rear of Y17 seems to sport wraparound full-width LED tail-lamps.
The interior is generally out of sight, but a couple of hints at the cabin are made available. The Y17 will come with a giant, freestanding touchscreen infotainment system. Aside from that, the design of the dashboard is entirely new when compared to the standard Grand Vitara.
The Y17 will also get the same Global C platform as the usual Grand Vitara. Its expected engine options are going to be the same as those to get along with the 5-seater version - a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid engine. Expect the same gearbox options with this one as well.
Maruti is going to manufacture the Y17 from its new Kharkhoda facility in Haryana. The new facility will come up by mid-2025. Y17 is going to be the first product to rollout from this facility and is expected to hit the roads towards the end of 2025.
Once launched, the Maruti Y17 will face competition at the hands of other 7-seater SUVs like the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV700 and MG Hector Plus. These are three-row variants of their 5-seater siblings and capture good sales in the market also.
