August witnessed significant shifts in the passenger vehicle market, with some vehicles achieving impressive sales increases while others facing declines. The month highlighted the strong performance of established names and the rise of new contenders in the Indian automotive landscape.

With 19,190 units sold, the Maruti Brezza emerged as the top-selling SUV in August 2024. This represents a remarkable 32% increase compared to August 2023 translating to the highest-ever monthly volumes garnered by the sub-compact SUV.

Hyundai Creta continued to maintain its strong presence in the market, securing the second spot with 16,762 units sold. This is a 21% year-on-year rise from the previous year and has a clear lead over other models in the segment – Kia Seltos, Grand Vitara, etc. Due to its stylish design and premium features, the Creta continues to appeal to a broad range of buyers, solidifying its position as a top choice in the mid-size SUV segment.

The sales of Tata Punch reached 15,643 units, reflecting an 8% increase from August last year. The micro-SUV’s popularity can be attributed to its robust build quality and competitive pricing (Rs 5.99 lakh - Rs 10.19 lakh, ex-showroom), appealing to urban buyers looking for a compact yet versatile vehicle.

Mahindra had a stellar August and the combined sales of Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N nearly reached 14,000 (13,787) to represent a 39% year-on-year rise. The homegrown brand recently launched its five-door Thar Roxx, which sits under the Scorpion N.

Maruti Fronx reported a modest 2% increase in sales, totalling 12,387 units. Despite steady competition from rivals like the Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue, the Nexa offering is ahead. Out of the two engine options, a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol and 1-litre turbo petrol, the non-turbo mill sells the most.

One of Tata’s bestsellers, the Nexon achieved an impressive 53% growth y-o-y, selling 12,289 units. As Tata recently launched the electric and ICE iterations of the Curvv coupe SUV, it remains to be seen how deeply Nexon’s sales are affected in the coming months.

The Kia Sonet experienced a remarkable 144% increase in sales, with 10,073 units sold. This phenomenal growth highlights the Sonet's increasing popularity, likely driven by its attractive design, advanced features, and competitive pricing. Kia also introduced a new Gravity trim for the sub-compact SUV with features like 16-inch alloy wheels wireless phone charger, dash cam, Indigo Pera seats with navy stitching and white brake callipers.

Once a strong performer, the Hyundai Venue SUV saw a 17% decline in sales, dropping to 9,085 units. The car shares its underpinnings with the Kia Sonet and has an ex-showroom price band from Rs 7.94 to Rs 13.43 lakh.

The Maruti Grand Vitara experienced was sold for a total of 9,021 times, marking a 24% decline. Despite its reputation for reliability, the model’s drop in sales suggests that it may be struggling to maintain its appeal in a highly competitive market. Notably, the Japanese carmaker offered great discounts on the SUV earlier this year.

The XUV700 had a great month with a 38% growth. However, units sold stood at 9,007, making it occupy the tenth spot on this list. This growth reflects continued interest of buyers in the SUV’s blend of performance, technology, and space, appealing to families and tech-savvy buyers alike.
