BYD Atto 2 PHEV is heading to India Offers a range of up to 1000km

A new teaser confirms that BYD will soon launch its first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model in the Indian market. The Chinese automaker has started testing the Sealion 6 PHEV on the Indian roads. However, few media reports suggest that the BYD Atto 2 PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle) is also on cards for our market. Adding to it, BYD has also patented the Leopard 8 PHEV off-roader, which will act as a flagship model for the brand in India.

The BYD teaser reveals that the upcoming model will use the carmaker’s ‘DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV’ powertrain. DM-i stands for ‘Dual Mode - intelligent’, which refers to a plug-in hybrid tech where conventional engine and all-electric setup work together to offer efficiency and low running costs of an EV. This tech also eliminates the range anxiety associated with electric vehicles.

For people not in the know, BYD has been testing the Atto 2 SUV in the country. It was first spotted in India in August 2025. The BYD Atto 2’s plug-in hybrid powertrain, comprising a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine paired with a 7.8kWh or an 18kWh battery pack. While the former offers 166hp, the powertrain with bigger battery offers 212hp.

BYD claims that the Atto 2 with 7.8kWh battery version offers a combined WLTP range of 928km. On the other hand, the larger battery version offers a combined WLTP range of 998km on a full charge and fuel tank. The SUV offers an electric-only range of around 39km on a single charge.

Dimensions

The BYD Atto 2 will be the brand’s entry-level model, measuring 4330mm in length, 1830mm in width and 1675mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2620mm. The SUV rides on 17-inch alloy wheels. It is packed with sharp LED headlights with Daytime Running Lights, and a full-width tail-light.

The BYD Atto 2 DM-i offers a boot space of 435-litres, which can be further extended by up to 1335-litres by folding the rear seats.

The new BYD Atto 2 PHEV comes with a sleek vegan leather seats and ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof. This plug-in hybrid version comes with six-way electrically adjustable front seats and adjustable headrests. It is packed with a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a multi-functional steering wheel with an intuitive layout with simple controls, etc.

The plug-in hybrid version comes equipped with LEVEL-2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) with features like autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane assist and others.
