Japanese car manufacturer, Toyota is working on the next generation Hilux lifestyle pick-up truck, which is expected to make global debut sometime next year. Similarly, the next-gen Toyota Fortuner is also under development. Both models will come with significant changes in terms of styling and interior. Moreover, the new SUV will receive major mechanical changes.
A new Japanese media report claims that the next generation Toyota Hilux will be based on the TNGA platform, called the GA-F. This platform currently underpins the Land Cruiser 300 and 250. Similarly, the next-gen Toyota Fortuner will be based on the same GA-F architecture.
The outgoing Hilux and Fortuner are based on the ladder-frame chassis, called the IMV. Toyota has introduced a low-cost version of the IMV architecture, called the IMV 0 that underpins the Hilux Champ. In fact, Toyota will launch an all-new mid-sized SUV, rumoured to be called Land Cruiser FJ, based on the IMV 0 platform in 2026.
The next-gen Hilux and Fortuner will come with new suspension set-up, including a front multi-link and rear trailing link. This is the same set-up available with the Land Cruiser 300 and 250. The outgoing models come with truck-style leaf spring set-up.
The new Hilux and Fortuner will be powered by a 1GD-FTV type inline 4, 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This engine is capable of producing 201bhp and 500Nm of torque, while the mild hybrid unit adds another 16bhp and 64Nm.
