Toyota has started working on the next-gen Hilux lifestyle pick-up, which has already been caught testing multiple times. It is expected to make its global debut sometime in 2026. The Japanese manufacturer is also working on the next-generation Toyota Fortuner, which is yet to enter testing phase. However, multiple foreign media reports reveal key details on its launch timeline, design and mechanicals.
The next-gen Toyota Fortuner and Hilux are reportedly to share the platform and design with the Toyota 4Runner and Tacoma pick-up, respectively. Both models are based on the TNGA-F modular platform that currently underpins wide range of models, including Land Cruiser, Tacoma, 4Runner and other Lexus and Toyota models.
The move to the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) will help the brand to cut down number of platforms to develop its popular models for domestic and international audiences. Adding to it, the TNGA-F is a versatile platform which can supports a wheelbase length of 2,850-4,180mm.
The Japanese automaker is opting a single base for the entire global SUV portfolio. This strategy will help the Japanese automaker in reducing cost, development time and achieving considerable gains in economies of scale.
The next-gen Fortuner is most likely to share design with the Tacoma pick-up and the 4Runner. It will have an aggressive front bumper, which will be designed to add improved off-road credentials. The SUV will have wider fender flares, a flat bonnet with strong curves, prominent cladding, flared wheel arches, and skid plates.
The next Fortuner will be offered with a new 2.8-litre diesel engine with an integrated starter generator. The new mild-hybrid system will allow Fortuner to collect Kinetic energy during braking or deceleration that can provide an additional torque under acceleration. This engine is capable of producing 201bhp and 500Nm of torque, while the mild-hybrid unit adds another 164bhp and 64Nm.
It is expected that the next-gen Fortuner could get a 2.4-litre hybrid turbo petrol engine, which powers few global Lexus and Toyota models.
Toyota is developing an all-new lifestyle SUV, rumoured to be called the FJ Cruiser or Land Cruiser FJ. This SUV will be based on the IMV 0 ladder frame chassis that underpins the Toyota Hilux Champ. The next Fortuner will be a premium offering, leaving enough space for Toyota to add another SUV in its India line-up. It is expected that the FJ Cruiser will be sold in markets where Toyota Corolla Cross is not present.
