Tata Motors is preparing to add more fuel options to its popular SUV lineup. The petrol-powered versions of the Tata Harrier and Safari are expected to launch before the all-new Sierra, which is scheduled to arrive by the end of the 2025-26 financial year.
According to the latest updates, the petrol variants of the Tata Harrier and Safari are set to launch before the Sierra. These will mark the first time both popular SUVs are offered with a petrol engine, as they have so far been available only with diesel powertrains.
This move comes as Tata looks to appeal to a wider range of customers by offering multiple engine options, including cleaner and more efficient petrol alternatives.
The Harrier, Safari, and Sierra will all get Tata’s new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. This engine, first showcased at the 2024 Delhi Auto Expo, is expected to produce 170PS of power and 280Nm of torque. It will likely be offered with two transmission options — a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT).
Tata also has a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine that currently powers the Tata Curvv SUV coupe. This smaller engine could also find its way into some variants of these upcoming models.
In addition to the new petrol engines, the Harrier and Safari could also receive feature upgrades. Some of these updates might come from Tata Harrier EV, which has recently been launched at Rs 21.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
While the Harrier and Safari petrol versions will debut first, the Sierra will follow later in FY2026. Tata has confirmed that the Sierra will come with petrol, diesel, and electric powertrains. The electric Sierra will arrive before its ICE counterparts.
The Sierra EV is likely to borrow its battery setup from the Harrier EV. It could feature two battery options — a 60kWh pack with front-wheel drive and a 75kWh pack with all-wheel drive. The AWD version will come with a dual-motor layout and is expected to offer a driving range of over 500 km on a single charge.
