According to media reports, the Kia Carens is all set to receive a new powertrain option which has been updated to meet the BS6 Phase 2 Emission Norms. The upcoming MPV is slated to feature a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol motor that has just been introduced in the updated Hyundai Alcazar Facelift. This engine is also going to be offered in the upcoming Next-Gen Hyundai Verna. We take a closer look at the expected changes.

The new 1.5-litre T-GDi motor is rated for a maximum power output of 160 bhp with 253 Nm of peak torque. Expect the same power and torque figures in the Kia MPV as well. The power output is 10 bhp and 11 Nm more than the current 1.4-litre turbo-petrol unit and this will make the Carens among the most powerful models in its segment.
Kia Motor India is believed to offer a 6-speed iMT transmission in place of the 6-speed manual gearbox for the new powertrain while the 7-speed DCT automatic stick will be retained for the model.
Kia Carens’ diesel variants will continue to come powered by a 1.5-litre turbo diesel motor that makes 114 bhp of power with 250 Nm of peak torque. It is paired with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Kia is planning to launch the updated Carens in India by mid-2023. The Korean automaker, along with the new powertrain, will also be introducing new entry-level variants with a 5-seat layout at a more affordable starting price. However, it is expected to miss out on a few features like leatherette seats and the middle-row folding armrest.
The company is expected to hike the prices for the Carens with the launch of the updated powertrains. Prices for the MPV currently range from Rs 10.19 lakh to Rs 18.45 lakh (ex-showroom). It rivals the likes of the Maruti Ertiga and the XL6 in its segment.
