Aiming to revive its market presence, Honda Cars India placed a big bet with the Elevate midsize SUV, which went on sale in September 2023. It also marked Honda’s entry into the compact SUV segment, currently dominated by the Hyundai Creta. Initially, the Honda Elevate boosted the brand’s sales numbers, but they have been declining gradually. In fact, the Amaze and City sedans are also losing their footing in the market. Though the carmaker recently gave the Amaze compact sedan a generation change with comprehensive cosmetic and feature upgrades, making it a more value-for-money product with a marginal price hike.
There is still a noticeable gap in Honda’s Indian product lineup, which the company plans to address with three all-new models. The Japanese automaker has confirmed that it will introduce “3 New Name Plates” in India by FY’26-27. While the carmaker hasn’t yet revealed the names and details of these forthcoming products, it is expected that these will be SUVs catering to different segments. Let’s take a look at what these models could be:
Honda has confirmed the launch of the Elevate EV in 2026. It will be the first model under the brand’s ACE (Asian Compact Electric) project. The carmaker has announced that nearly 50 to 70 percent of the upcoming ACE models manufactured in India will be exported to major overseas markets, including Japan. Codenamed DG9D, the Honda Elevate EV will compete with models such as the Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, and the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV and Maruti e-Vitara. In order to prepare for its EV production, Honda will begin retooling its Tapukara facility this year. The electric Elevate is expected to feature EV-specific design changes inside and out. As of now, there is no information available on its powertrain.
According to media reports, Honda Cars India will introduce a new flagship 7-seater SUV by the end of 2027. This model will debut Honda’s all-new modular platform, codenamed PF2. The new architecture will also underpin the next-generation City sedan and a compact SUV. The upcoming Honda 7-seater SUV is being co-developed by Honda’s Japan and Thailand R&D centers, with inputs from India. It is too early to comment on its powertrain, but the new Honda 7-seater SUV is expected to share the 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine from the Elevate. Additionally, Honda might equip the SUV with the City’s strong hybrid powertrain for a more premium offering.
Honda will re-attempt to tap into the sub-4-metre SUV segment with a new model in early 2029, as per media speculations. It is worth noting that Honda discontinued the WR-V subcompact SUV, along with the fourth-generation City and the Jazz hatchback, in April 2022. The new subcompact SUV from Honda will face competition from multiple models, including the Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and Maruti Brezza. This new SUV will be based on Honda’s PF2 architecture. Currently, there are no further details available about the new Honda subcompact SUV.
