The competition in the sub-4-metre SUV segment is set to become fiercer with the arrival of the all-new Kia Syros. This compact SUV from the South Korean automaker made its global debut in India. Prices for the vehicle will be announced in February 2025, following its public unveiling at the Bharat Mobility Show in January. In the subcompact SUV space, the Syros will face competition from several models, including Tata’s and Maruti Suzuki’s top-selling SUVs, the Nexon and the Brezza, respectively. Let’s examine how these three models stack up against each other in terms of engine performance, features, design, and dimensions.
Kia has strategically equipped the Syros with turbocharged petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol version features a 1.0L motor that produces 120 bhp and 172 Nm of torque. The diesel variant is powered by a 1.5L engine delivering 116 bhp and 250 Nm of torque. The model is available with three gearbox options: a 6-speed manual (standard), a 7-speed DCT automatic (petrol only), and a 6-speed torque converter automatic (diesel only). Higher automatic variants also come with paddle shifters.
The Tata Nexon, under the hood, offers a 1.2L turbo petrol engine and a 1.5L diesel engine, producing 120 bhp with 170 Nm and 115 bhp with 260 Nm, respectively. Both engines are available with a 6-speed manual gearbox and an AMT transmission. Additionally, the petrol engine comes with a 5-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza, on the other hand, is offered only with a 1.5L K15C petrol engine that generates 103 bhp and 137 Nm of torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard, while a 6-speed torque converter automatic with paddle shifters is available on the top three trims.
The Brezza is the least powerful vehicle among this trio but the only one to feature mild hybrid technology. It is also available with a CNG fuel option.
The Kia Syros stands out as the most feature-loaded, spacious, and comfortable vehicle in its segment. According to the carmaker, it boasts a 30-inch display system, including a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 5-inch screen for the climate control system.
The Syros offers several segment-first features, such as flush-fitted door handles, OTA (over-the-air) updates, sliding and reclining rear seats with ventilation, and Level 2 ADAS. Other highlights include in-car connectivity technology, an 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, all four ventilated seats, a 360-degree camera, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, electronic parking brake, six airbags, and more.
The Tata Nexon, in comparison, comes with a slightly smaller 10.25-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with navigation. It features only front ventilated seats. However, it includes connected car technology, an air purifier, a wireless charger, a voice-assisted single-pane sunroof, six airbags, electronic stability control, Isofix child seat anchors, and three-point seat belts for all passengers, among other features.
While the Kia Syros leads with its advanced features, the Nexon and Brezza are also well-equipped. The Maruti Brezza’s higher trims feature a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, wireless phone charging, an Arkamys sound system, a head-up display (HUD), rear AC vents, connected car tech, voice command support, cruise control, ambient lighting, automatic climate control, Alexa compatibility, USB Type-C and Type-A rear charging ports, and a sunroof. On the safety front, the Brezza is equipped with six airbags, a 360-degree parking camera, electronic stability control, ABS with EBD, Isofix child seat mounts, and hill hold assist.
The Kia Syros is the largest and most spacious among these three vehicles. Its length, width, and height measure 3,995 mm, 1,800 mm, and 1,665 mm, respectively, with a wheelbase of 2,550 mm. It boasts a boot capacity of 465 litres, which is 80 litres more than the Kia Sonet.
The Tata Nexon shares the same overall length of 3,995 mm but is slightly wider at 1,804 mm. However, its height is 1,620 mm, and its wheelbase is shorter at 2,498 mm. The Nexon offers a boot space of 382 litres, significantly less than the Syros.
The Maruti Brezza measures 3,995 mm in length, 1,790 mm in width, and 1,685 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,500 mm. Its cargo volume stands at 328 litres, making it the least spacious among the three.
The Kia Syros features a boxy and tall-boy stance, drawing design inspiration from Kia’s EV9 and EV3 models. It sports the signature Tiger Nose grille, vertically stacked headlamps with three LED projector units, and LED DRLs. The front design is distinctive, with a closed-off nose and air intakes in a blacked-out area with contrasting silver trim. The side profile includes blacked-out A, C, and D pillars, body-coloured B-pillars, pronounced wheel arches with plastic cladding, and segment-first flush-fitting door handles. The rear features a dual-tone black-and-silver bumper and high-mounted L-shaped taillamps surrounding the rear windscreen.
The Tata Nexon, refreshed in a recent facelift, takes design cues from the Harrier EV concept. It sports a slim front grille, a split headlamp setup in trapezoidal housings, integrated DRLs, and a front bumper with a bold bar running across its length. Updates include redesigned 16-inch alloy wheels, repositioned reverse lights, and a full-width LED light bar connecting the taillamps.
The Maruti Brezza underwent its latest update in mid-2022, featuring noticeable design changes for a fresher look. It has angular edges, a flat clamshell bonnet, a gunmetal-finished grille, squarish dual-LED headlamps, and upright styling. The design includes black cladding around the body, updated 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, and a refreshed rear with slim, horizontally positioned taillamps and prominent “Brezza” badging.
Design preferences are subjective. However, the Kia Syros leans towards a boxier look, the Nexon embraces a sporty design, and the Brezza offers a robust and sizeable appearance despite similar dimensions.
