Tata Motors is slated to introduce the New Punch CNG in India soon. Latest media reports suggest that the brand has started series production of the upcoming model. It will become the fourth CNG product in Tata’s model lineup, following the Tigor, Tiago, and Altroz. We take a closer look.
Visually, the only difference between the Punch petrol variants and the CNG trims will be the new ‘i-CNG’ badging on the bootlid. Other than that, it will look identical to its sibling.
The automaker will also offer the Punch CNG in multiple variants. In terms of features, key highlights will include a 7-inch infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, a push-button start/stop, auto climate control, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat.
Unlike its competition, Tata’s unique CNG-cylinder set up means that the Punch CNG will not lose out on any boot space. Instead of a single large cylinder, Tata’s dual-cylinder system is positioned under the boot floor. Introduced first in the Altroz CNG recently, each cylinder has a 30-litre capacity.
Powering the upcoming Punch CNG will be the 1.2-litre, 3 cylinder petrol motor. The power plant is capable of producing a maximum power output of 77 bhp with 97 Nm of peak torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox will be the sole transmission option available on the vehicle.
The Punch CNG will be priced at a small premium over the petrol variants. Currently the model is priced between Rs 6 lakh to Rs 9.52 lakh (ex-showroom). With its introduction buyers could have to pay Rs 80,000 - Rs 1 lakh extra.
Upon launch, Tata Punch CNG will rival the likes of New Hyundai Exter CNG, the only direct rival in its segment.
