The new-generation Toyota Hilux is all set to make its world premiere at the Thailand Motor Expo 2025, scheduled between November 28 and December 10. This will be the ninth generation of the popular pickup, coming after a gap of nearly a decade since the last major update.
Over the past eight generations, the Toyota Hilux has sold more than 19 million units globally. Known for its toughness and reliability, it has been used by civilians, armed forces, and off-road enthusiasts worldwide. Its history includes the introduction of 4WD in the 1970s, SUV-style versions in the US, and the creation of the Toyota 4Runner/Hilux Surf.

Patent sketches and spy shots suggest a bold new design. Expect a taller front grille, slender LED headlamps, and possibly a connected light strip. At the rear, the Hilux will sport new tail lamps and squared-off wheel arches with cladding, giving it a rugged look. Despite the changes, the truck will continue with the proven IMV ladder-frame platform.
The 2025 Hilux will offer a more premium cabin with better trims and materials, a fully digital instrument console, and a large infotainment screen. Toyota is also expected to add electric power steering and a suite of advanced driver-assist features for better safety.
Under the hood, the familiar 2.8-litre diesel engine (201 hp) with 48V mild-hybrid tech will continue. However, reports hint at a plug-in hybrid version by 2026. Performance enthusiasts may get a GR Hilux, powered by the Tacoma’s 2.4-litre i-Force Max hybrid engine producing up to 326 hp. A fully electric Hilux is also on the cards before the end of the year.
Toyota Hilux was launched in India in January 2022 and has been assembled at TKM’s Karnataka plant. While the 9th gen Hilux is expected in Thailand first, an India launch could happen by 2027 or later. The new design and features are also likely to influence future models of the Fortuner SUV and Innova Crysta MPV.
