Latest media reports suggest that Toyota is developing a diesel mild-hybrid powertrain for its popular Hilux pick-up truck. Currently the best selling vehicle in Australia, it is most likely to be the first market where this new engine option would be introduced. We take a closer look at this pick-up to decipher what all it will have to offer.
As per rumors, Toyota is gearing up to launch a mild-hybrid Hilux variant in the Australian market soon. It is being speculated that the Japanese automaker could launch the new engine option in the current-gen model rather than waiting for 2025 when it is expected to introduce an All-New Toyota Hilux. This said, the brand is still a bit concerned as a mild-hybrid system with minimal fuel savings can adversely affect its image.
Unlike Toyota’s petrol-electric strong-hybrid which is known for offering great efficiency and reduced emissions, a mild-hybrid system provides only marginal improvements in both areas. It is being believed that the automaker may even decide to not use the Hybrid moniker upon the launch of the new mild-hybrid diesel powertrain.
Currently, the Toyota Hilux comes powered by a 2.4-litre four-pot turbo diesel engine. The power plant is good for developing 149 bhp with 400 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options here include a manual and an automatic.
