Kia’s Approach: Next-gen Sonet and Syros EV to Lead 2026-27 SUV Offensive

New Syros EV launch by October 2026 Next-gen Kia Sonet to arrive in 2027

Kia India is preparing for a massive product overhaul in the sub-4 meter SUV segment. The South Korean automaker has confirmed two major launches in the next couple of years; the all-new Kia Syros EV and the next-gen Kia Sonet. These two products represent Kia’s dual-prolonged approach - capturing the growing EV market with the Syros electric while further strengthening its ICE dominance with an all-new Sonet.

Next-gen Kia Sonet: Launch in 2027

Next-gen Kia Sonet testing begins

With testing officially begins, the next-generation Kia Sonet is slated for 2027 debut. It will be an all-new model based on a new platform, which is intended to address current model’s biggest criticism - the rear-seat legroom.

New Platform: the next-gen Sonet will be developed on the new K1 platform that also underpins the Syros. This shift to a newer platform allows for a longer wheelbase and better cabin packaging, offering improved second-row comfort.

Design Change: Similar to the new Seltos and EV9, the 2027 Kia Sonet will carry a different and boxier profile with more upright stance. It will feature a wider “Tiger Nose” front grille, sharper vertical LED headlamps, and new 16-inch crystal-cut alloy wheels.

Powertrains: it is likely to retain the engine options: 83hp, 1.2L NA petrol, 120hp, 1.0L turbo petrol and a 116hp, 1.5L CRDi diesel. A hybrid variant is also under development, which is rumoured to be launched in 2028-29.

Kia Syros EV: Launch in 2026

The Kia Syros EV set to be the brand’s entry-level electric vehicle for the Indian market. Likely to be launched around October 2026, the new Syros electric will be positioned below the Carens Clavis EV and will directly rival the Tata Nexon EV and the Mahindra XUV 3XO EV.

Design & Platform: the Syros EV will be based on the modified version of the K1 platform. It will retain the upright, boxy stance of the ICE-powered model, except for the EV-specific design changes including the “Star Map” LED lighting and a closed-off aero-optimised grille.

Range & Power: It is likely to be offered with two battery choices, 42kWh and 49kWh, offering a real-world range of around 350-450km.

Key Features: dual 12.3-inch curved screens, panoramic sunroof, LEVEL 2 ADAS tech, a premium 8-speaker sound system, ventilated front and rear seats, electrically adjustable driver’s seat and others.
