New Mahindra compact SUV likely to be called Thar Sports Global debut likely on August 15, 2025 It will be based on a new front-wheel-drive NU platform
The homegrown automaker, Mahindra is preparing to showcase 4 new concepts and an all-new compact SUV on August 15, 2025. The company will also preview its new front-wheel-drive, NU platform at the event. It was speculated that the new compact SUV will be the next-gen Bolero; however, media reports claim that the new SUV could be called the Mahindra Thar Sports.
It will be the brand’s global SUV and will also go on sale in Australia. Due to legal reasons, the new SUV will adopt a different nameplate in Australia. The report claims that the new Mahindra Thar Sports will be based on a modern monocoque platform, which will significantly improves on-road comfort, safety and refinement. The Thar 3-door and Thar Roxx are based on the traditional ladder-frame architecture.
The new Thar Sports is reportedly to share design cues from the Thar-e electric SUV concept that debuted in South Africa on August 15, 2023. It will feature the signature Mahindra rugged styling associated with products like Scorpio-N, Thar Roxx and Bolero.

The spy images reveal that the new Mahindra Thar Sports will carry a boxy design with a flat bonnet, squarish front design and shorter overhang. Upfront is a uniquely designed grille, new Mahindra logo and a rugged bumper that houses a new fog lamp housing. Also visible are the Thar-Roxx like circular headlamps.
The new Thar Sports gets flush-type door handles, squarish wheel arches, and usable roof rails. It comes with a side hinged rear door, and a tailgate mounted spare wheel, and new vertically stacked tail-lamps.
In terms of features, the new Mahindra SUV will have a large touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, a digital driver’s display, automatic climate control, height adjustable driver’s seat, and a panoramic sunroof. The SUV will have 6 airbags, ESP with traction control, hill launch assist and hill descent control for safety. Moreover, the lifestyle SUV is also likely to get LEVEL 2 ADAS tech with features like adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane assist and others.
The new Mahindra Thar Sports is likely to be offered with multiple powertrain options, including a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine that produces 109bhp and 230Nm of torque. The SUV will also receive a hybrid powertrain at a later stage. For people not in the know, Mahindra is working on a new hybrid engine using its 1.2L turbo petrol engine.
The India-spec model is also likely to get a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, turbo diesel engine that powers the Mahindra XUV 3XO and Thar 3-door. This engine is capable of producing 115bhp and 300Nm of torque. Transmission choices could include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
