Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra is reportedly developing a new coupe SUV, likely to be called the XUV500 Coupe. The new coupe follows the Mahindra XUV500 Aero Concept that was showcased at the Auto Expo a couple of years ago.
While the Mahindra XUV500 was replaced by the XUV700 in the country, the new model is likely to revive the nameplate in an all-new avatar. Now, the latest spy shots have revealed Mahindra testing its SUV coupe in India. We take a closer look.
The new leaked images reveal the upcoming XUV500 Coupe (code name ‘S301’) being tested in Chennai. Even though the test mule is clad in heavy camouflage, we noticed some of the design elements of the coupe SUV.
While the rear end features a faux boxy profile, one can make out the steeply sloping roofline for a coupe-like silhouette. The test mule also had what looked like flush-fitting door handles similar to the XUV700.
As per the latest reports, the new XUV500 Coupe will be underpinned by the same platform as the XUV300 sub-compact SUV. Mahindra will likely modify the platform to make it larger than the XUV300 as the new model will sit a segment above it.
While details about the new SUV are scarce, we expect the automaker to offer both petrol and diesel powertrain options. Expect the 1.5-litre turbodiesel and 1.2-litre turbo-petrol motors from the XUV300 to be carried over, but with higher peak power and torque figures to compensate for the added weight. Mahindra may also offer a powertrain option from the XUV700 on a performance-oriented flagship variant.
Positioned between the XUV300 and the XUV700, the new XUV500 Coupe will sit bang in the middle of the compact SUV segment. Expect prices to range between Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom) - Rs 19 lakh (ex-showroom).
Upon launch, the XUV500 Coupe will compete against the likes of the Kia Seltos, MG Astor, Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara, Honda Elevate, Škoda Kushaq, Citroen C3 Aircross, VW Taigun, and the Toyota Hyryder.
