It is no secret that Toyota is developing an all-new mid-sized SUV, which is rumoured to be called the Land Cruiser FJ. Adding to it, a mini version and an all-new electric SUV are also expected to be based on the new FJ Cruiser. A recent media report from Japan claims that the long-awaited Land Cruiser FJ will be revealed by mid-2025.
The new SUV will come as a spiritual successor of the FJ Cruiser, which was sold in global markets from 2006 to 2022. The company had showed a teaser image of the small SUV during the launch of the all-new Land Cruiser Prado way back in August 2023.
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ was speculated to be revealed by late 2024; that didn't happen. According to the Japanese automotive magazine, BestCarWeb, the new SUV could be revealed during 'Spring 2025'. Based on Japanese seasonal calendar, the new SUV could be introduced between March and May this year.
It is expected that the Land Cruiser FJ will share some of the hardware and software with the new LC Prado. The new SUV is likely to be based on the IMV-0 platform that also underpins the Hilux Champ pick-up truck. It is basically the low-cost and heavily reworked version of the IMV architecture that underpins the Fortuner and Hilux Pick-Up.
The new SUV will measure around 4.5 meters in length, which is significantly smaller than the Toyota Fortuner. However, the wheelbase is most likely to be around 2,750mm that's similar to the larger sibling. It will be sold in markets where Corolla Cross is not on sale.
The new Toyota SUV will be offered with petrol and turbo diesel engines. It is likely to get the same diesel engine with micro-hybrid tech that powers the Hilux. The powertrain comprise of a 2.8L turbo diesel engine benefitted with a belt-driven electric motor/generator, a small lithium-ion battery and a converter. This engine produces 204hp and 500Nm of torque. Other engine choice could be the 166bhp, 2.7L petrol with an automatic gearbox as standard. 4x4 drivetrain will also be on offer.
The new FJ Cruiser is expected to be launched in multiple markets in Europe, the Middle East, South America and Oceania. We believe that this SUV could be launched in India where it could fit well between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Fortuner.
Other reports reveal that Toyota is developing an all-new mid-sized SUV, which will be based on the TNGA-C platform. This is the same platform that underpins the Innova Hycross; however, the architecture will be modified and will come as a low-cost platform. It will come with petrol and petrol-hybrid engine.
