Toyota Land Cruiser FJ to first launch in Japan India launch expected in 2028
Toyota’s smallest and most affordable Land Cruiser, the Land Cruiser FJ, will finally go on sale in the Japanese market on May 14, 2026. In fact, the company has also started production of the new off-roader. The new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ will also arrive in our market, most probably in 2028. It could be the first product to roll out from Toyota’s upcoming Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant in Maharashtra.

The new Land Cruiser FJ is based on a body-on-frame IMV platform that also underpins the Fortuner, Innova Crystal and Hilux. In terms of proportions, the FJ is 4575mm long 1855mm wide and 1960mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2580mm. It has a boot space of 765-litres. The new FJ has a ground clearance of 215.3mm, and has an excellent approach angle of 31 degrees.
The India-spec model is not likely to be offered with a diesel engine; however, Toyota officials confirms that the Fortuner and Hilux will continue to be offered with diesel powertrain post new CAFE norms. We believe that Toyota could offer the Land Cruiser FJ with a 2.8-litre diesel engine with a micro hybrid setup.
The SUV will be powered by a 2.7-litre petrol engine that churns out 163hp and 246Nm of torque. The India-spec model could also get a strong hybrid and a plug-in hybrid option. Transmission choices could include a 6-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual unit. A part-time 4WD system will come as standard.
The new FJ manages to look as tough as bigger Land Cruisers, as it has an upright stance and rugged design elements. The front has a rectangular grille in gloss black that houses ’TOYOTA’ motif at the centre, a C-shaped LED DRLs, and a chunky bumper with fog lamps and a silver skid plate. The Land Cruiser FJ has boxy silhouette with flared fenders and wheel arches, prominent black cladding, tailgate mounted spare wheel and a chunky rear bumper.
The SUV gets all-black cabin that houses a large centrally mounted touchscreen infotainment unit, a 3-spoke multi-functional steering wheel, round AC vents on either sides of the dashboard, and a digital driver’s display. The SUV gets leatherette seats, multiple airbags, a 360-degree surround view camera and LEVEL 2 advanced driver assistance system (ADAS).
