We informed you earlier that Volkswagen is planning to launch a new sub-4 meter SUV in India in 2026. It will be based on the same modified MQB AO IN platform that underpins the Skoda Kylaq. In the global markets, the new SUV will be called the VW Tera that has already been caught testing multiple times. The new Volkswagen Tera will finally make its global debut on March 2, 2025.
The new entry-level SUV from the German carmaker will be revealed during Carnival 2025 in Rio De Janeiro (RJ). Ahead of the official debut, Volkswagen do Brasil, CEO and President, Ciro Possobom revealed some fresh details on the new Tera on a corporate social network.
This time, the new Volkswagen Tera was revealed in a camouflaged form in an indoor environment. The vehicle appears in production avatar and is ready to enter the production line. In the teaser video Possobom said that the Tera will be a car "for those who like to drive".
The clearest spy shots reveal that the new Tera shares design cues fro the latest VW SUVs for European nations. The front design looks identical to the new-gen Tiguan, featuring a large lower grille. There is a new chrome element that connects the headlights to the main grille. It misses out on VW's latest illuminated grille. Moreover, the global-spec model could miss out on a sunroof option. However, the India-spec model is most likely to get a single-pane sunroof. VW Global aims to position the new Tera somewhere between the Polo and the entry-level Nivus and T-Cross.
The side profile seems inspired by the European T-ROC, featuring a wider rear pillar. In the global markets, the SUV will challenge the likes of the Citroen Basalt, Fiat Pulse and Renault Kardian. The rear gets the T-Cross like LED tail-lights.
The new VW Tera will be produced at the Taubate factory. It will be based on the VW Group’s versatile MQB-A0 platform that also underpins the Polo, T-Cross, Nivis and Virtus. In fact, the India-spec entry level VW SUV will use the same platform that has already been localised for Taigun and Virtus. The SUV will have a wheelbase of 2566mm, which is similar to the global Polo hatchback.
The Tera sub-compact SUV will be powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine that also powers the Kylaq. This engine in Brazil produces 116bhp in the Polo; however, the Nivus and T-Cross gets the 128bhp version. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. The global spec model could also get a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 84bhp, and is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
VW will launch a new sub-4 meter SUV in India in 2026. It will share the body panels and underpinning with the Skoda Kylaq; however, the design will be inspired by the new Tera. It will be powered by a 1.0L turbo petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox options.
