The homegrown UV maker, Mahindra is reportedly working on two hybrid engines - a series-parallel and a range extender. Both powertrains will use the existing 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine that currently powers the Mahindra XUV 3XO. The new series-parallel hybrid engine will power the XUV 3XO, while the range extenders will be offered on the XEV 9e and BE 6 SUVs.

The Mahindra XEV 9e is based on the skateboard platform, called INGLO. This platform will require specific technical and design changes to integrate the ICE powertrain. The SUV’s hybrid set-up will use the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, turbo petrol engine, which will function as a generator to recharge the battery. The battery will power the electric motors to drive the wheels.
Not just Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki is also developing a range-extender engine for its mass-market cars, including the Fronx, Baleno, Swift, and an upcoming small MPV. This setup will use the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which also works as a generator to charge the battery.
KIa, Hyundai, MG Motor India and Volkswagen Group is also planning to launch hybrid cars in India. Kia will launch the next-gen Seltos and a new 7-seater SUV with a hybrid engine in India in 2026 and 2027, respectively. Similarly, Hyundai will also introduce the Palisade hybrid and the next-gen Creta hybrid.
Mahindra XEV 9e is currently available in two battery packs - a 59kWh and a 79kWh. Both offered a rear-axle-mounted electric motor. The smaller battery pack version is claimed to offer a certified range of 542 km, while the 79kWh battery version has a range of 656km. The XEV 9e with a 79kWh battery is claimed to achieve 0-100kmph acceleration in just 6.8 seconds.
