Maruti Suzuki is expanding its SUV portfolio by introducing a new 7-seater version of the popular Grand Vitara. The new variant, codenamed Y17, has been spotted testing near Maruti’s plant, signaling that the launch is near. The 7-seater Grand Vitara is expected to be officially launched around Diwali 2025. The Maruti Grand Vitara 7-seater is larger than the current 5-seater Grand Vitara. The most distinguishing characteristic is adding a third row of seating on top of the existing ones that will provide even more space for passengers.
The 7-seat Grand Vitara will also get some of the upgrade from the 5-seater. It will have two configurations: a 6-seat captain chair and a 7-seat extended family configuration. The interior will feature some of the additions such as a bigger touchscreen infotainment screen, additional interior themes, and more comfort features. It must feel premium inside with new technology and design improvements. Features to be transferred from the 5-seater variant would be a sunroof, front ventilated seats, six airbags, and electronic stability control. The 7-seat Grand Vitara also has an optional tyre pressure monitoring system and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that will be offered in order to further make it safe. It will differentiate it from its competition in its class and make it a number-one-wanted vehicle by customers looking to buy a family-focused SUV.
Maruti will offer two powertrains for the 7-seater Grand Vitara. The first is the 1.5-litre K15C mild-hybrid petrol powertrain, which produces 101.65 bhp power and 136.8 Nm torque. The engine will come with a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic, offering choices to the drivers depending on the driving pattern.
The second engine will be a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder strong-hybrid petrol engine with 113.97 bhp power and 141 Nm torque. The engine will come with an e-CVT transmission, which is said to offer smooth and frugal driving experience. The engines will be fine-tuned to deliver the proper balance of power and fuel efficiency.
The Maruti Grand Vitara 7-seater would cost around Rs. 15 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh. This would place it alongside other mid-size SUVs already in the market. The model will be launched by Diwali 2025, and hence it would be a timely launch for Maruti Suzuki. Its likely price segment and time window of launch make it an extremely strong player in the 3-row SUV segment that is highly competitive. Maruti Grand Vitara 7-seater will be pitting itself against highly established 3-row SUVs in the domestic market. They are the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV700, and MG Hector Plus.
Maruti Suzuki has registered two new brand names, "Escudo" and "Torqnado." Of the two, one could possibly be used for the 7-seater Grand Vitara. Although still undecided whether the 7-seater will carry the current Grand Vitara nameplate or a new one, there is a possibility of a new name. Suzuki will decide depending on its marketing strategy and positioning in the market.
