The Indian automobile industry is going through a rapid transition with the arrival of EVs, hybrids and E20 fuel. While major brands like Tata Motors and Mahindra are focusing on EVs to drive sales in future, Maruti Suzuki sticks to its multi powertrain strategy. The company has already announced to introduce 4 EVs by the end of this decade.Let’s talk in detail about Maruti Suzuki’s strategy for the Indian market.
India’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki is preparing to launch its first electric vehicle, the e Vitara in the Indian market this fiscal year. The company has asked the Government of India to develop public charging infrastructure at a rapid pace to accelerate Electric Vehicle adoption in India. MSIL believes that driving range anxiety remains major concern among customers, and they avoid choosing an EV as their primary car.
Maruti Suzuki is working to set up charging stations in 100 cities before introducing the e Vitara in India. The electric SUV is based on Suzuki’s e HEARTECT platform, which will also underpin Toyota’s upcoming electric SUV. The SUV will be offered with two battery packs - 61.1kWh and 48.9kWh.
The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara will support fast charging and the bigger 61.1kWh battery can attain 0 to 80% charging status in 50 minutes. The electric SUV will offer a range of around 500km on a single charge.
Maruti Suzuki will launch a new midsize SUV, rumoured to be called the Escudo, on September 3, 2025. This SUV will come with petrol, CNG and hybrid powertrains. It will get the Toyota’s 1.5L TNGA hybrid engine that is claimed to offer an ARAI certified fuel economy of around 28kmpl.
MSIL is also working on an all-new series hybrid engine to power its mass market cars. The Fronx hybrid will be the first model to feature the new in-house developed hybrid engine. This powertrain will use the 1.2L Z Series petrol engine, an electric motor and a small battery pack. Here, a petrol engine will act as a generator to charge the battery. Other models to get the new hybrid engine includes Swift, next-gen Baleno, Spacia based MPV and the next-gen Brezza.
Maruti Suzuki is dominating the CNG sales with around 70% of the market share. The company aims to offer CNG fuel option with all its models, including the upcoming Escudo midsize SUV. It is reported that MSIL Is also working on an all-new entry-level model with multiple powertrain options, including mild-hybrid, CNG and flex-fuel.
The new entry-level car will serve Indian consumers earning Rs 5-13 lakh annually and attract more first-time car buyers. The big update is that the upcoming Escudo is likely to be the first Maruti Suzuki model to feature an underbody CNG tank. This will help MSIL to free up space in the boot.
