New Honda City RS Variant – India Launch Possible?

Honda City RS variant revealed in Thailand. Sporty sedan gets hybrid technology and premium styling. India launch possibility now becomes a big question.

Honda has officially revealed the updated Honda City facelift in Thailand with a sportier RS variant that is already generating interest among sedan enthusiasts in India.

The refreshed City lineup overseas includes both sedan and hatchback body styles along with hybrid technology, updated styling and Honda’s latest ADAS features. While Honda India recently launched the City facelift locally, the sporty RS version remains exclusive to Thailand for now.

However, with the growing demand for premium and sporty sedans, many are now wondering whether Honda could eventually introduce the City RS in India as well.

What Makes the Honda City RS Special?

The RS variant sits at the top of the Thailand-spec City lineup and gets several cosmetic enhancements over the standard model.

It features sportier exterior styling with exclusive RS badging, aggressive alloy wheel designs and darker exterior accents.

The front end gets sleek ‘Blade-Eye’ LED headlamps along with segmented LED DRLs that double up as turn indicators. Honda has also added a redesigned bumper and a new honeycomb-pattern grille for a sharper appearance.

At the rear, the City RS gets revised bumper detailing while maintaining the familiar tail lamp design.

Overall, the RS trim gives the City a much more premium and sporty character compared to the standard sedan sold in India.

Hybrid Powertrain Takes Centre Stage

One of the biggest highlights of the Thailand-spec Honda City RS is its hybrid setup.

The sedan uses Honda’s e:HEV hybrid system with Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) technology.

The setup combines a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with an electric motor. The electric motor produces around 100 bhp and 253 Nm of torque, while the petrol engine mainly works as a generator to charge the battery pack.

The hybrid system supports EV, Hybrid and Engine driving modes for better efficiency and smoother performance.

In comparison, the India-spec Honda City currently gets a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 119 bhp and 145 Nm. It is offered with both manual and CVT gearbox options.

Feature List Gets More Premium

Honda is positioning the City facelift as a premium sedan globally, and the RS variant reflects that strategy clearly.

The Thailand-spec model gets Honda SENSING ADAS features similar to the India-spec City facelift.

It also comes equipped with a large touchscreen infotainment system, digital displays and connected technology.

While features like ventilated seats are available on the India model, Honda has not yet confirmed whether the Thailand-spec RS gets the same equipment.

Could Honda Bring the RS Variant to India?

At the moment, Honda India has not confirmed any plans to launch the City RS locally.

However, the growing popularity of sporty trims and hybrid technology in India could make the RS version an interesting addition to Honda’s lineup in the future.

The City remains one of Honda’s strongest products in India, and introducing an RS variant could help the sedan attract younger enthusiasts looking for something more premium and sporty.

Honda has already shown stronger interest in hybrid technology globally, and with stricter fuel-efficiency and emission norms expected in India over the coming years, hybrid models may play a bigger role in the company’s future strategy.
