Kia Sorento will launch on September 4 with hybrid and diesel options. MG’s new 7-seater SUV could get electric and plug-in hybrid power. Renault and Nissan are preparing new three-row SUVs with hybrid technology.
India’s seven-seater SUV segment is set for a major shake-up over the next 12 to 18 months. Kia, JSW MG Motor India, Renault and Nissan are preparing new three-row SUVs, with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains expected to be a key part of the upcoming models.
These SUVs will add more choices for buyers who want three rows without relying only on traditional petrol and diesel engines.
The Kia Sorento will be the first major launch among these upcoming seven-seaters. It is scheduled to launch in India on September 4, and bookings are already open. The India-spec model is expected to be offered with both hybrid and diesel powertrains. The hybrid version could use a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a six-speed automatic gearbox. The international version produces around 230hp. Kia is also expected to offer features such as twin 12.3-inch screens and Level 2 ADAS.

JSW MG Motor India is preparing a new three-row SUV, which is expected to be called the Hector Tomahawk. The SUV is based on the Wuling Starlight 560 and is expected to be offered with both electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The PHEV version could use a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 20.5kWh battery. The combined system is expected to produce around 197hp and 230Nm. The battery could provide up to 100km of electric-only range on the CLTC cycle, allowing the SUV to cover shorter daily trips without using the petrol engine.
Renault is also working on a larger three-row SUV based on the new-generation Duster. The model is expected to take design inspiration from the global Boreal SUV. It could arrive in India during the later part of the current financial year and is expected to use several powertrain options from the Duster range. These could include a 1.0-litre petrol, 1.3-litre turbo-petrol and 1.8-litre strong-hybrid powertrain. The new SUV will get a different exterior from the five-seat Duster, along with additional equipment and technology to suit its larger size and three-row layout.
Nissan is expected to launch its own version of Renault’s upcoming three-row SUV. The new model will sit above the Tekton in Nissan’s India portfolio. It is likely to share its platform and powertrain options with the Renault SUV, including a hybrid option. However, Nissan is expected to give the SUV its own exterior styling and cabin design. This will help differentiate it from the Renault version despite the shared underpinnings.
