Tata Motors has announced that it is currently developing the pure-electric version of the Punch micro-SUV. It will become the first EV to be based on the brand’s ALFA platform, which also underpins the Altroz hatchback. It is expected that the Punch EV could be showcased at the Delhi AutoExpo 2023.
The exterior of the Tata Punch will look largely the same as the ICE-powered variant, this is not a bad thing as it is an attractive looking vehicle. The split-headlights, concave bonnet, slim grille, and large air dam with contrasting black bumper gives the micro-SUV a chunky front profile. Over to the sides, the blacked-out pillars and roof, rear door handles on the C-pillar, and 16-inch wheels provide the Punch with a purposeful stance. The rear tailgate is fairly simple compared to the front and side profile but still gets circular tail lights with tri-arrow LED elements.
Furthermore, the electric Punch will become one of the first models to be launched under Tata’s New .EV sub-brand, meaning that the automaker may not use the light blue accents it currently does to differentiate its electric models.
The Punch EV’s interior will also carry over the design and features from the ICE models. You’ll get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, semi-digital instrument cluster, cruise control, auto climate control, and more. The electric micro-SUV could also be offered with switchable regenerative braking and few other unique features.
Like the Nexon EV, Tata may offer two powertrain options - Medium Range and Long Range. The former will use a 26 kWh battery pack that powers a single electric motor making a maximum power output of 74 bhp with 170 Nm of peak torque. The Long Range model will use a 30.2 kWh battery pack, also powering a single motor that would make 140 bhp and 250 Nm of torque. However, it may be detuned for a slightly lower power output.
Prices for the ICE-powered Tata Punch range from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 9.54 lakh (ex-showroom). Expect the Punch EV to cost slightly more than that. The micro-SUV will be the first one to get an electric powertrain in its segment, giving it the first mover advantage that other Tata models have used to great effect.
