Volkswagen has started development on a new entry-level EV that will be positioned below the recently introduced ID 2 electric hatchback. Dubbed the ID 1, the new EV will be the smallest model in the automaker’s pure electric vehicle lineup.
The ID 1 will be based on VW’s new MEB First FWD platform. It will be one of four models - the Cupra Urban Rebel, ID 2 and an entry-level Škoda model - to be underpinned by the new platform. The architecture allows for lithium-iron-phosphate batteries which are more cost effective, helping reduce production costs.
VW recently revealed a new sketch that gives us a hint at what the ID 1 will look like. The electric hatchback has a muscular design with an angular front end and features signature ID elements like the horizontal front light bar. The designers wanted to give the ID 1 a futuristic look to highlight the digital functionality aspect of the EV, helping to attract younger buyers.
Slated to launch in 2026, the ID 1 will be similar in size to the current-gen Polo (not sold in India). The new model could end up taking the nameplate in the future similar to VW plans to use the Golf and Tiguan monikers for upcoming EVs.
VW is likely to offer the ID1 with a 57 kWh battery pack powering a single front-mounted electric motor that would make 243 bhp of power. While the brand did not reveal any specification details, it is expected to have around 402 kms of range on a single full charge. The new powertrain will be a big step forward from the current setup in the e-Up, which the ID 1 will effectively replace.
