Tata Motors is aiming to regain its lost market share in the passenger electric vehicle segment. The company plans to launch multiple new EVs to regain its market share of 50 per cent. Tata Motors will be entering the above 20 lakh category with its upcoming electric SUVs, Tata Harrier EV and Sierra EV.
Speaking to PTI, Tata Passenger Vehicle and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Managing Director Shailesh Chandra said that the company is also working on making the total cost of ownership (TCO) of its EVs in fleet segment comparable to that of the CNG vehicles.
Tata Motors is currently selling EVs in the price bracket of Rs 8 lakh to Rs 20 lakh; however, it has no presence in above 20 lakh EV market. The company currently has 40-41 per cent market share in passenger EV category, which is a decline of around 15 per cent compared to last fiscal. Intense competition in the 12-20 lakh EV segment and decline in fleet sales are the main reason behind Tata’s market share decline in EV segment.
In the Rs 8 lakh to Rs 12 lakh price bracket, Tata Motors is currently selling Tiago.ev and Punch.ev with a market share of 75 per cent. The brand’s market share drop to 33-35 per cent in the Rs 12 lakh to Rs 20 lakh segment due to rising competition. In this segment, Tata Motors is currently selling the Nexon.ev and Curvv.ev. Tata Motors will announce the prices of the Harrier EV on June 3, 2025. It is expected to be priced somewhere around Rs 24 lakh to Rs 30 lakh. This SUV will directly rival the Mahindra XEV 9e, BYD Atto 3 and others in the category. Similarly, the Sierra EV is likely to cost somewhere around Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh. It will be a lifestyle SUV and will cater to a different set of buyers. The Sierra EV will come as a premium alternative to the likes of the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6 and others.
The Tata Harrier EV will come with a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup, and is expected to offer a range of up to 500km in a single charge. The SUV is likely to be offered with two battery choices - a 60kWh and 75kWh. The Sierra EV is also likely to share the engine specifications with the Harrier electric.
